The acronym for SMART is:

S – Specific

M – Measurable and Motivational

A – Achievable

R – Realistic and relevant

T – Time frame

Question and Directions to The Client:

I. What outcomes you would like to achieve in the next 3-6 months.

The word “outcome” refers to a change in your feelings or relationship or satisfaction in a particular area. Write down 1-3 crucial outcomes that you would like to move towards:

II. Next, set yourself a Personal Goal that meets the SMART requirements above that you want to aim to achieve within a specified time, which you believe will help you towards the outcome:

III. Finally, list below the Actions that you will start on within the next two weeks to help you begin to move towards each goal. For each action, you need to specify what it is, when you will do it & which goal it is relevant to:

(This second exercise is extracted from David Bonham-Carter’s ebook,50 Life Coaching Exercises)

4. Keep a Daily or Weekly Diary – This is a fast and straightforward way for clients to see themselves moving forward is to keep a daily or weekly diary. I use this often with my clients. A journal or diary will also help your client identify habits and patterns for both positive and negative feelings. Keeping a diary is ideal for life coaching clients, especially those struggling with stress and some anxiety in their lives.

In the exercise, the client has to commit to keeping a diary. Clients have the option of logging daily or weekly entries. Most of my clients find it helpful, making entries a few times weekly, and then we talk about it at the next session. The goal is for them to make the entries at least weekly, and later, in the following month, they look at what progress has been made. They become aware of any routine or patterns they have developed.

Sample Questions Clients Can Ask Themselves

What did I enjoy most about my day or week?

What did I learn today or this week?

What activity or situation (positive or negative) impacted my week or day?

What would I need to do differently about my day or week?

I have found David Bonham- Carter’s eBook, 50 Life Coaching Exercises to be an excellent resource for every coach who is looking for helpful and practical self-life coaching exercises to support their clients.
By the way… you’re invited to claim your FREE step-by-step “ Master Coach Blueprint” video toolkit.
