Spend 10-15 minutes to prep ahead of time
Before each mindset coaching session, spend at least 10-15 minutes reflecting on your client’s needs and creating an agenda for the call. What are the most important issues your client is dealing with right now? What kind of results have they gotten since your last call? Get them ready and by preparing yourself fully before a call, you’ll be able to assist your client and assure them of your coaching prowess.

2. Focus on what matters most to your client
Talk with your clients about whatever matters most to them right now, not whatever you think you “should” be addressing. It doesn’t matter if your client is a business person, a musician, a successful athlete, or an inventor. They all have the attitude and qualities to rise above their own personal troubles and see things others can’t or don’t see. If this is your first coaching or discovery call, this stage would allow you to build a rapport with your client and understand their needs better.

Here are some questions to ponder upon:

What is your client’s mindset and how does it profoundly affect the way he or she sees things?

Do they have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset?

Do they possess the wrong mindset that can sabotage their success?

3. Be direct and honest
Apart from displaying professionalism during your mindset coaching call, you need to be candid with your client so he or she can focus on challenging themselves and meeting their objectives. What are the causes of your client’s self-defeating behavior and how can he or she counteract this behavior?

4. Work toward outcomes
Measure your mindset coaching calls on impact. Ask your client to reflect on this question: “What can I do to change my self-defeating mindset and embrace a new mindset that is in line with my goals and values?”

If your client has a fear of failure, success, taking risks or making mistakes, reassure him or her that everyone has this fear at some point on the journey to success. This is often just a fear of change. Then let them think about what is the worst that can happen. Then turn it around….What’s the best thing that can happen? Then help them not to dwell on what could go wrong. Let them see that everyone makes mistakes. The key is to learn from them.

5. Plan another mindset coaching call with your client
Invite your client to participate in another coaching call. During this session, you can help your client problem-solve around the challenges they face and work together with your client to ensure they are ready to change their mindset and develop a mindset that’s positive, looks outside the box, thinks bolder and bigger and is willing to embrace failure.

A few questions I answered in this post:

[sc_fs_multi_faq headline-0=”p” question-0=”What are the causes of my coaching client’s self-defeating behavior?” answer-0=”If your client has a fear of failure, success, taking risks or making mistakes, these things could cause self-defeating behavior.
