There is a lot of dogma in the coaching world around whether or not a coach should &#8220;give advice&#8221; (or tips) to clients, and I wrote this to clarify some of those issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are coaching tips?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Coaching tips are hacks, strategies, or ways to get from A to B. This includes advice, little answers, strategies, or \u201chow-tos\u201d that can support a coach in doing a great job coaching, or support a client in getting results from their coaching. Plenty of coaches offer advice or tips to their clients for exactly this purpose.<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"853\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CyI6Cr2tI_U?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s discuss the 3 different levels of <strong>coaching tips<\/strong> that a coach might give:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=71s\">1:11<\/a><\/strong> Advice<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=105s\">1:45<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Powerful Questions<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=194s\">3:14<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Coaching Competencies<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to skip forward to any of these topics, you can click on the (above) time codes to skip to that part of the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLmoVgA3lQlA3gvFQHSJxrBe0J2w1_wUq8\">WATCH THE ENTIRE &#8220;WHAT IS COACHING&#8221; VIDEO SERIES HERE<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=71s\">01:11<\/a><\/strong> Why are there &#8220;3 Levels&#8221; to coaching tips?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All coaching tips aren\u2019t \u2018created equal\u2019.&nbsp; There are different levels of tips that a coach might give.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Level ONE Coaching Tips:&nbsp; ADVICE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first level (this is really the lowest level coaching tip) would be advice.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advice is just straight answers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not the greatest expression of what a coach can provide, but it still provides some value.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don\u2019t know how to get from New York to LA, and I tell you, \u201cTake this road, and turn left here, and go here and here and here to get where you want to go,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;that\u2019s valuable. but&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;you\u2019d probably figure it out without me as your coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s one of the reasons why advice is the not one the most <strong>effective coaching techniques<\/strong> you can use in your sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Level TWO Coaching Tips:&nbsp; POWERFUL QUESTIONS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=105s\">01:45<\/a><\/strong> Want to know <strong>how to improve coaching skills<\/strong> quickly? This next level coaching tip is where coaches begin to thrive&#8230; \u201cpowerful questions.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Powerful questions coming from a coach will open doors to all sorts of different answers.&nbsp; In fact, these questions create a flood of answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8230;powerful questions create a flood of answers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you ask me, \u201cHow do I get from New York to LA,\u201d and, in return (instead of doling out advice), I ask you,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cWhat are the different ways you think we might get from New York to LA?&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>&#8220;How do you want to get there?&#8221;<\/li><li>&#8220;What are the different ways that other people have gotten there?&#8221;<\/li><li>&#8220;How do you feel about actually going to LA in the first place?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are infinite answers that could come from just those 4 or 5 questions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Powerful Questions Open up Options.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=142s\">02:22<\/a><\/strong> Powerful questions open up options.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From just a handful of questions, you\u2019ll get all sorts of different approaches and&nbsp; strategies that can get your client &#8220;from New York to LA\u201d (or whatever result they\u2019re after).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Powerful Questions That Provoke Mindset Shifts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the most powerful questions are questions that provoke a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/twenty-mindset-coaching-questions-to-get-your-clients-unstuck\/\">mindset shift<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, if I was to ask a client, \u201cHow do you feel about that?,\u201d they\u2019re going to answer with their current mindset.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s fine, but the question isn&#8217;t provoking any transformation, is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s come up with an even more powerful question to provoke a true mindset shift.&nbsp; Imagine how must transformation your client can get from questions like these&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow would you like to feel about this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho are you, really, when it comes to this area of your life?&nbsp; Who would you like to be?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These kind of questions open doors to tons of different possibilities around the mindset that your client experiences right now, and the mindset they might experience next time they face that challenge or opportunity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mindset shifts galore!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Level THREE Coaching Tips:&nbsp; COACHING COMPETENCIES<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=194s\">03:14<\/a><\/strong> The highest level coaching tip (it\u2019s really not even a \u2018breed of tip\u2019, rather it\u2019s a unique property that emerges when you go beyond these lower two levels) is what coaches call a \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/category\/coaching-tips\/coaching-competencies\/\">coaching competency<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With certain coaching competencies, you can ask infinite powerful questions in a coaching session.&nbsp; During the webinar, I\u2019ll cover how you can gain an ICF Credential in a matter of months.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/coachcertificationtraining.com\/credentialing-webinar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Click HERE now to attend the webinar<\/strong><\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Considering that, I hate even calling coaching competencies \u201ctips\u201d, because they are so far evolved beyond the limited value of a measly \u2018tip\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coaching Competencies: A Few Examples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=243s\">04:03<\/a><\/strong> Here are some examples of coaching competencies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Active Listening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/best-coaching-practices-art-of-active-listening-2\/\">Active listening<\/a><\/strong> is the ability to hear what a client says, but also beyond their mere words, including the ability to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>hear things that a client &#8220;didn\u2019t say\u201d (non-verbal or unspoken communication)<\/li><li>hear what a client might be suggesting (that\u2019s implicit in their communication)<\/li><li>hear what a client is avoiding<\/li><li>hear the emotion in what a client is saying<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many different &#8220;breeds&#8221; of active listening.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of active listening is asking questions so you can learn more from a client as you\u2019re listening to them, to continue to follow the &#8220;trail of breadcrumbs&#8221; your client has laid out for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Direct Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=274s\">04:34<\/a><\/strong> <strong>Direct communication<\/strong> is the ability to powerfully communicate to your client in such a way where your client doesn\u2019t just hear the meaning of what you\u2019re saying, but they fully experience the depth of possibilities emerging from what you\u2019re presenting to your client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Creating Awareness<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=292s\">04:52<\/a><\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bhvR6gvkn-A\">Creating awareness<\/a><\/strong> is the ability to support your client in becoming aware of something that they weren\u2019t aware of before, which includes the capacity to\u00a0 deepen a client\u2019s current awareness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are proficient in creating awareness, you\u2019ll have tremendous potential to ask all sorts of powerful questions, and give inspiring advice to deliver more (and deeper) awareness in your client.&nbsp; Do you see how this \u2018meta-competency\u2019 opens the door to many other actions and techniques in your coaching process?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8230;this \u2018meta-competency\u2019 opens the door to many other actions and techniques in your coaching process&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Competencies Encapsulate The Rest of Your Coaching<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyI6Cr2tI_U&amp;t=313s\">05:13<\/a><\/strong> Do you get a sense of why a <strong>coaching competency<\/strong> encapsulates lots of different questions, and each <strong>powerful question<\/strong> encapsulates lots of <strong>tips, advice, and answers<\/strong>?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why there is a &#8220;hierarchy&#8221;
