So when I finally became a coach, I knew the tools, and strategies learned during my training can be used to help my young clients (pre-teens and youths about to age out of foster care). Regrettably, there is a sizable population of children in the foster care system, and many of them end up aging out by the time they reach their 18th birthday without the proper guidance and tools they need to make it out there in the world.

My Role as a Foster Mom

I have been a foster parent for almost three years, and it feels like a lifetime considering my husband, and I have fostered over fifteen children till date. My role as a foster mom is to provide a stable and nurturing environment for the children in my care. Simultaneously, I am also a board member of a governmental agency that provides oversight for the New Mexico children, youth and families department (CYFD). Our job is to evaluate the extent to which the department is effectively discharging its child protection responsibilities. The welfare of our children is very important and in my corner of the world, my hope is to be able to change the trajectory of a child’s life in substitute care. As a life coach and foster caregiver, I will continue to work on creating a safe, healthy and stable environment for children using the tools, resources, and strategies at my disposal.

Foster Care System in the United States

What is foster care? It is a system in which minors are immediately removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. In the US, they are typically placed into a state licensed private home, group home, residential treatment center or other substitute care. The state licensed caregiver is frequently referred to as a “foster parent” which can be an individual unfamiliar to the child or a relative. Child placement is primarily arranged through a social service agency or the courts. The goal for a child in the foster care system is most often reunification with the birth parents. However, adoption, guardianship or kinship care (raising of children by extended family members) is sometimes considered when it is in the child’s best interest.

Based on the latest government estimates, there are approximately 438,000 children in foster care in the United States. This is a tragic reality!

What do Life Coaches do For Youths Exiting Foster Care?

What do life coaches do for these at-risk youths? They partner with states and counties to adequately provide specialized coaching services to young adults aging out of the system. By the time kids in care turn 18 years old, they often lack the adequate resources, social and independent life skills they need to succeed. What then can life coaches do for these youths at the point they age out? Coaches come alongside their young clients to help them recognize their potential, viable options and direct them towards achieving long term goals for the future. Several studies show that without a lifelong connection to a compassionate adult, these teens are vulnerable to rapid rates of homelessness and post-traumatic stress. Therefore, as life coaches, the goal is to come alongside these vulnerable youths to assist with their transition into adulthood; helping them with the effective tools, locating wrap around services and resources, they require to enjoy a healthy and stable lifestyle.

The impact life coaches can have on at-risk youths aging out of the foster care system is incredibly high. From working with them on job skills & budgeting to connecting them with housing & tutorial services for academic success contributes significantly to their overall success as adults. Coaches educate, empower and enthusiastically embrace these vulnerable youths to become successful young adults in society.

By the way… you’re invited to claim your FREE step-by-step “30-Days to Become a Coach” video toolkit.
