As a client is working with you, say, to gain some balance in their life, to gain financial stability, or find their life purpose, they will inevitably come to realize this: “The life I have led up till this point has not been mine.” If you are looking to be (or are) a coach in this niche, then read on.

racorn © 123RF.com

Career Coaching To Achieve Fulfillment

It’s important to recognize that it’s common for people to initially blame their job, their boss or their co-workers for their frustration or dissatisfaction at work. Because, hey! It’s not their fault they ended up in this situation! Right? Of course not! And that’s one of the most important jobs of a coach, to help individuals realize that it IS their fault! Now, depending on your personal style of coaching, you may want to be as rough or as gentle as you find to be the most effective with each client.

What I find is that as a person’s confidence, self actualization, and awareness grow through your coaching and guiding them, it may become evident to them that their job or overall career has not been aligned with who they are as a person or with their personal vision at all.

Basic Principles of Career Coaching

The next thing I find useful for clients who are ready for a career change is to work together with their coach to figure out the following:

What do they want (specific logistics such as hours, location, pay, etc)

What is their mission and purpose in life

What is their core asset or assets

What gets them excited

What do they stand to achieve/have/feel with the “ideal” job or career

How would the ideal job or career tie in with their overall life vision, or the “big picture,” goals

What are their limiting beliefs, question them to their death (may sound like: “I have to work full time or I’ll be broke”, “I have to be my own boss or it won’t work out”, etc). Usually they won’t disclose their rationale for each belief without some digging on your part

What are their basic needs that they are lacking and want to fulfill through an awesome career(this one technique is not only used for career coaching, but is relevant to any type of coaching)

That last one may reveal other challenges a client has not been present to after signing up with a career coach. This in turn will create a further opportunity for improvement in other areas of life. Say their relationship sucks and they are just focused on finding a better job or career as a distraction. If you attempt to uncover that kind of pattern in your client, then you’re digging for gold (more like digging up their hidden skeletons)!

It’s important to realize that not only is this line of questioning beneficial for the client but it may further extend the coaching relationship, become more financially profitable for the coach and also create more possibilities for greater results for the client long-term.

Career Coaching Logistics

Some other aspects for career coaches to include in their practice may be such things as helping with…

resumes

cover letters

where to look for work, etc.

Now, I’ve seen some coaches dive right in and help with all those little details (heck, I’ve done it myself). But at the same time, you as the coach need to know what your own limits are. What I mean is, are you comfortable putting the “consultant” or “assistant” hat on for your clients?

Honestly, that’s up to you to decide and neither option is right or wrong. I have helped my clients with the above, but what I found to be most helpful was to help him or her find their authentic voice.

Why?

Because, chances are, up till now, they have been spending over 30 or 40 hours per week in a place where they are not themselves, acting to either please the boss, not upset the customers/clients/patients, or feeling deeply and constantly frustrated that they can do so much more than the rules of their particular organization allow them to.

My personal duty, or mission (especially when I am in the career coaching mode) is to help such individuals realize that it doesn’t have to be this way, that they are able to be themselves and follow their vision and purpose with freedom and excitement, knowing that there are others on the same mission. All they have to do is make themselves visible.

A recent question I received, from a woman I was doing career coaching with:

Client: “But I don’t have any past experience to write about on my cover letter or bring up on the interview. How do I connect it to why I want to work here, at this new place?”

Coach, me: “Why are you applying to this particular job in the first place?”

Client: “They have the same mission I would love to be a part of.” Then she had a lightbulb moment, a breakthrough. Career coaching at its finest!

Does experience matter to the right employer? Chances are, if the employer is solely looking at their experience and right past the person that they are, that is not the place for them. What matters most is the person’s dedication, an aligned mission, determination and ability to take action for matching an employer with their ideal team members.

There Is Always A Deeper Issue To Be Discovered

Many people live a world of a self-made prison. The wrong career path only solidifies that prison. Some may be on a clear path and may need just a little help from a coach. Yet others can be struggling with deeper issues such as lack of self esteem or confidence, negative thought patterns, and multiple limiting beliefs, which they may not even be aware of on their own. This issue is so prevalent in our society, you will never run out of available clients and people to help.

Overall, career coaching doesn’t mean you need to have all the answers for your client. Being the catalyst for those finding their ideal job or career means helping them recognize themselves as WHOLE (that they are already good enough for the work they want to be doing), and allowing them to feel free to be themselves and live out their life purpose.

Special Bonus – Learn 3 simple ways to become a life coach with the “30-Days to Become a Coach” video toolkit when you fill in the form at the top right and click the “Watch The Videos Now” button.
