The wheel of life is a great exercise and assessment tool that coaches can use to help their clients create more balance and achieve more goals in their lives. Wheel of life coaching makes this tool a centerpiece of their coaching practice.

Life Coaching

What is the Wheel of Life?

Some people may be familiar with the Buddhist wheel of life, but the coaching wheel of life is different. Buddhism’s wheel of life focuses more on awareness of one’s mental state, while the wheel of life for coaching concentrates on how a client is currently spending time and how satisfied they are with their use and balance of both personal and work time.

The Wheel of Life Coaching Tool

The wheel of life can be separated into different categories:

• Physical environment
• Fun & recreation
• Business/career
• Finances
• Family & Friends
• Health
• Personal growth
• Romance

You can add other categories as you wish – spirituality, volunteerism – whatever fits within your client’s needs. Basically, you have the power to create any type of wheel you want. You simply split a circle up into segments and assign categories as your wish. Then you can use your personally designed wheel as a wheel of life coaching tool.

You can even create separate wheels for personal or business. You can use prepared wheels or make them different for each client.

How to Use the Wheel of Life Coaching Tool

Once you have the wheel you are going to use for a client, that client scores their sense of satisfaction in each category, with 10 being the best and 0 being the worst. You record the scores for each category.

Sometimes it is difficult for the client to rate each category; here are a few questions you can use to help the client come up with a satisfaction rating:

Career – Is your job rewarding? Does your job pay enough? Does your job reflect your values?
Health – Are you generally fit and healthy? Do you exercise on a regular basis? Do you have healthy habits?

Finances – Do you have enough money for the basics? Do you have enough money for some leisure activities? Do you understand how to save and budget?

Personal Growth – Do you enjoy learning new things? Do you have enough time to learn and explore new things? Do you feel like you are continually growing as a person?

Fun & Recreation – Do you have enough fun? Do you like to have fun? Do you know how to relax?

Romance – Is your love life exciting? Do you get along with my spouse? Are you longing for something you don’t have?

Using the Scores From the Wheels of Life Coaching Tools

Whether you have used one wheel or a few wheels, you need to do something with the scores. Once you have all the categories scored, it may be apparent which categories need the most work. Use your coaching skills, through inquiry and active listening, to find out why a particular score is so low. Then, work with your client to find solutions that may raise the score to acceptable levels.

Use this wheel of life enough and you can become a wheel of life coaching expert. It is a powerful tool to use with your clients. It is also fun and encouraging. Clients will slowly open up and reveal more about their hidden fears, desires, and dreams – allowing you to help them find satisfactory outcomes.

Hope you took some great value out of this post today!
