The psychology of coaching is much more than motivational ‘Ra-Ra’. It’s about finding out what really drives people into taking action above and beyond what most people would take. Why does it appear so easy for some people to take action where others struggle? Are they so much smarter? Most of the time it comes down to motivation. It takes no more energy to watch television than to sit at the computer and work on making a difference in the world.
The Psychology of Coaching Is About Helping People Meet Their Needs
Even though I love to work out, know exactly what to do, and have been exercising for so many years I could do it in my sleep; I don’t push myself as hard when I’m by myself. Why is that? When I’m in an exercise class, I feel significant. I can keep up with the best of them except in Zumba where I need to be coordinated. In a class environment I get connection with others in the class and we encourage each other. There is variety in the music and the activities beyond what I would create if it were just for myself. When I’m exercising by myself, I can easily slip into a mode of wanting to feel comfortable and not push myself too much. Everyone does this to some extend even if we understand the psychology behind our actions.
Setting Your Clients Up For Success

Showing your coaching clients how they can get their needs met at a higher level by taking action toward their goals is just the beginning. Beyond just understanding the psychology of coaching, you need to provide accountability for your clients. Be a stand for their dreams, and don’t let them slide into old comfortable habits when there is work to be done.
