Success Coaching and the Inner Game

Success coaching must address the three factors that govern our success in any contest, whether in business or in athletics. They are the Inner Game, the Outer Game and Action.

The Three Factors that Lead to Success or Failure

The term Inner Game refers to “what goes on in our heads” or our belief systems about ourselves and the contest in which we are engaged. Outer Game refers to those things outside of our belief systems. This includes our physical condition, skills and knowledge of the game. The third element, Action, is governed by the Inner and Outer Games, and is all the physical activity we put into the contest. This article will look at coaching the Inner Game for maximum success.

How Big Is Your Heart? How Limiting Are Your Beliefs?

When a success coach asks “How Big Is Your Heart?” they are asking “What is the limit to your commitment to playing as hard as you physically can?” When they ask “How limiting are your beliefs?” they are asking “How much less do you believe your abilities and endurance are than they actually are?”

These are key questions since each of us has witnessed dozens of examples of inferior players beating superior players because the winner was more committed, or the loser just did not believe that they had what was needed to win. Contests are won or lost based on the Inner Game.

Success Coaching to Win the Inner Game

Success coaching operates in two ways: First if the contestant is not willing to commit to give enough to win, the coach must tap into the contestant’s four basic needs and help them to see that the effort to win is worth the sacrifice. Second, if the contestant suffers from limiting beliefs, the success coach must help the contestant see that these are false beliefs and then obliterate them is they are no longer effective.

The final step in success coaching is to reinforce and anchor the new belief so that the old belief will not creep back in when the going gets tough.
