The biggest challenge in health coaching, or any other type of coaching, is helping your clients achieve results. Beyond losing weight and improving health, most clients want to target their “problem areas.” For men it’s their gut and for woman it’s their hips. Why is it so hard to lose weight in those places?
Two Myths That Prevent People From Achieving Their Goals
1
Myth #1: Exercising will help flatten your stomach. Possibly in extreme cases by improving posture, but in general spot reducing doesn’t work. When you exercise, you burn calories. Spot reducing is an aerobic exercise which primarily uses glucose, or blood sugar, as fuel. This fuel comes from the circulatory system that supplies blood to your working muscles with every beat of your heart. Sugars are the most readily available fuel and your body won’t start burning fat until the blood sugar levels are depleted.
Myth #2: If you loose enough weight, you’ll lose weight in your problem areas. Also true to some extent, but it’s not the whole story. If you want to get maximal results with your health coaching clients you need to look deeper.
The Real Reason Your Health Coaching Clients Aren’t Reaching Their Goals Fast
1
Most of us in western society each a crappy diet with an abundance of toxins. Our bodies were wondrously created with a built in sewage system to remove these toxins called the lymphatic system. What happens when we overload the system? If there are too many toxins to be removed, our body simply stores them where they are safe and can’t cause damage to our bodies. The safest and most efficient way of storing these toxins is in your fat cells.
One theory is to reduce the amount of toxins that you take in, which will help your body perform more optimally. Will it cause you to store less fat? It’s one theory. But in either case, when you become a health coaching expert who looks beyond calories, you start to really make a difference in people’s lives.
