Success Is the Best Marketing for Consulting

When it comes to marketing for consulting, the proof is in the pudding. I’m pretty sure that that means: if you aren’t producing good results, don’t waste my time. So here are three iron-clad ways to market your consulting in a way that will establish you as a real pro and bring you paying customers, too.

First, You Make a Million Dollars

There is an old Steve Marten routine, where he mimics an infomercial announcer promising to show you how to make a million dollars, tax-free. Steve’s first line is “First you make a million dollars” which is followed by an equally informative description of how not to pay the IRS any taxes on it. The point is that since the secret to marketing for consulting is to help your clients succeed through your consulting, then the first thing you need to do as a consultant is help your first clients succeed – big time.

Then You Get Your Clients to Speak Up

Actually, the trick is to make it really easy for your successful clients to tell everyone about it. One way to prime this pump is to give your first clients a deal saying that you’ll give them a special price if they agree to be a reference, once you have delivered the goods. It is important for them to realize that they get to say what they really feel. And it is your job to see that what they feel is GREAT!

Then Marketing for Consulting Becomes just Spreading the Word

So once you have success, marketing your consulting is all about capitalizing on that success. And this is how it’s done: create a press release; put testimonials on your website; create a YouTube channel with a collection of videos of your teachings and testimonials; develop an e-newsletter featuring interviews and case studies about your client’s successes. Et cetera. Et cetera. Et cetera. You get the idea. Or as a great PR person once shared with me: the best advertising is PR because everyone knows it is earned, not bought. And so it is with successful marketing for consulting!

Master Coaches Practice Creating Clarity

Coaches Practice many models, techniques and strategies with their clients. Creating clarity is the most valuable in my opinion. I coach my clients to define their focus and concentrate their power to create ultimate clarity. Your client will come to each session with beliefs and experiences of the world that determine their perception of what is possible for them.

Coaches Practice Clarity by Asking Powerful Questions

Creating a secure list of powerful questions to add to your daily coaches practice will benefit the client and build rapport in your sessions. There are a few ways to check in on the questions you are asking your client to discover if they are empowering.

Ask yourself if your questions

  1. Create movement toward what your client wants
  2. Unveil clarity, new ideas or intellectual understanding for your client
  3. Challenge your client’s beliefs
  4. Show that you are listening and are in clear understanding of your client’s perspective

Types of Questions You Can Use

There are a few types of questions that are useful and powerful in helping your clients to access more clarity around their unique challenges.

  • Brainstorming/Ideas
  • As if
  • Action
  • Beliefs/Identity
  • Fun
  • Outcomes
  • Summarizing

As you spend more time coaching each client, you can practice identifying what types of questions help your client to discover a break through in their patterns. It could be valuable to keep notes on how your clients respond to the questions you ask. As part of evaluating growth in your coaches practice see if you are aware what specific style of questions uniquely motivate active response from your client.

Listen Beyond Words to Access Clarity

Often time the clarity your client is seeking will lie buried beyond words. Coaches practice active listening to determine why life is fuzzy and out of focus for their clients. Active listening means you are able to turn off your self-expression and focus completely on your client. You must be able to determine when to jump in with a powerful question and when to allow the client to be silent.

A great way to add layers to your listening skills is to check in on if you are positioned in

  • Your own viewpoint
  • From someone else’s shoes
  • Taking an independent position

Master coaches practice listening from the view point of a witness, navigating through all points of view. Listen with a sense of love and connection to all areas of your client’s perception. At this level of listening you are able to allow true creativity into your sessions.

Powerful questions and active listening will create clarity. With clarity your client can take unprecedented action toward conquering any challenge and finding total success within their goals.

Hope you took some great value out of this post today! I’d love to hear your feedback, so make sure you leave a comment with your thoughts or questions. And also, you can click on the Twitter button below to retweet this article… Thank you!

The Fairest Approach to Executive Coaching Fees

When it comes to executive coaching fees, there are a lot of approaches. So much for a session. So much per hour. And something called the value-based approach. There are some pros and cons, but if done right, I believe that using value-based fees can be the fairest approach. Besides, it puts your wallet where your mouth is!

How Do Value-Based Fees Work

Whether with executive coaching fees, consulting fees, commissions or royalties, the idea behind value-based fees is to tie the money you are paid to the value you deliver to your client. Sounds reasonable, right? I am not saying that this approach will work with everyone. It won’t. But it can work well with executives. The reason is that executives think in terms of investments, return on investments (ROI), and value. This is also the way they structure their own compensation. Trust me; no executive with a compensation plan composed of salary, bonuses and stock options potentially amounting to millions of dollars, would have a problem working with a coach compensated in a similar way. If you want to coach a true executive, they need to view you as a peer, and structuring your compensation this way is a step in that direction.

Some Negatives of Value-Based Compensation

There are basically three concerns with value-based pricing, particularly with coaching fees. First, how do you measure the value delivered? Second, how much control do you actually have over the outcome? And third, do you have to wait until the end of the program to get compensated? The solutions to these concerns lie in using value-based fees with the right type of client, planning the engagement properly, and structuring your agreement appropriately.

Success with Value-Based Executive Coaching Fees

First as I indicated above, a big part of success with value-based executive coaching fees hinges on using it with the right type of client. If they don’t think in terms of ROI and value, consider a more conventional approach. This is why I have spoken about this form of fee structure in terms of executive coaching. Second, it is critical that you cast your work as part of a project that will deliver a real return, based on a real investment. Negotiate the return of the undertaking, with and without our coaching. This may be a new way for you to think, but it is THE way executives think. Finally once you have this number, negotiate a percentage of that difference that would be fair compensation for your effort. Really tie this down. Go for a conservative percentage. Remember a small percentage of a large number can still be a big number to you. Then help your client understand that much of the success of the project rests on them, not on you. And because of this, you should be paid so long as you deliver your part of the project. Once you get to this point, insist that you receive half of our fee upon signing the agreement and the second half thirty days later. And if you are dealing with the right client, and if you do a good job, you will have successfully implemented value-based executive coaching fees.

The First Step To Building a Coaching Practice

A lot of coaches never get around to building a coaching practice because they don’t feel like they are ready. Others don’t know where to begin. Of course, you can begin by coaching your friends and family. But does it really count? Building a coaching practice is much more than coaching. It’s proactively meeting people, setting up free coaching sessions, and enrolling them into coaching.

The Distinction Between Building a Coaching Practice and Just Coaching

When you actively contact people and coach them, you take control over your coaching business. Waiting for friends and family to ask for advice is not a basis for a business. Taking a passive approach to your business has an extremely limited future. It’s at best a hobby and unless you take your own business seriously, no one else will.

If you are taking action, however, you are in control of your own destiny. As you start taking actions that build a coaching practice such as running free sessions, you begin to take ownership of your business. You become the authority. Eventually these coaching sessions will become the backbone of your practice. You will have control over the growth of your business instead of being a passive recipient waiting for crumbs of bread.

What Else Can You Do To Build Your Coaching Business?

Other ways of building your coaching practice include using Facebook, LinkedIn, or other social networking sites, internet marketing, public speaking, joint venture partners, cold calls, networking events, referrals, and so on and so on.

Of course all these are great ways of building your coaching practice and some of these will bring so much business you’ll need to hire coaches to serve the clients that come to you if you are consistent over time. Until you master the skill of taking control of your coaching relationships and actively seek out clients rather than wait for people to seek out your advice, you have a hobby and not a business. Having a coaching hobby is fine, but you won’t make money and you won’t help your clients as much as you will when they know you make your living on your coaching skills.

It’s sad to say, but true. Until people somehow see your coaching practice as a business, they actually won’t see as much value in your time. It’s a bit of the old adage, you get what you pay for. Coaching family and friends for free cheapens the transaction. While I don’t charge my friends and family, they know that I have a business and that others pay me for the same advise they get for free. Somehow they

Marketing for Coaches: Complaint Marketing

Marketing for coaches, and for everyone else, involves identifying the needs of a group of prospects and then communicating to them that you are the ideal person to help satisfy their needs. Now if your job is to identify customer needs, what could be better and simpler than listening for their complaints? That’s Complaint Marketing. Simple? Yes, but…

The secret to Hearing Needs Is Listening for Complaints

Listening for complaints, that sounds simple. Sure. But if it is, why do so many of those cries for help go unanswered? Again, simple. Yes. You simply not be sincerely interested in understanding your prospects’ calls for help, or you can be too busy speaking to do any listening. Either way is a formula for disaster.

Marketing for Coaching Is All about Caring

Examine your very soul, and ask “Do I really care enough to stop and really listen?” That is the key question, not just for marketing for coaching but for coaching, itself. Do you care? Do you? And if you don’t, then please slowdown and accept that coaching is not for you. Now if you are still here – meaning that you do care – what is it that you hear when you really listen? It should be clear, but not if you are too taken up with speaking. So while many uncaring people have left the coaching profession, many people who are called to coaching, are more taken up with talking than listening, and yet refuse to leave the profession. Now because they don’t come to grips with the need to simply button it up, they are destined to a life of frustration dealing with what might have been.

These Are Good Days for Bad Nights’ Sleeps

If marketing for coaching comes down to really listening and then using our skills to help our clients move forward, what could be better days than these? Simply put these are days whose nights are marked by waking up in cold sweets and aching needs that coaches can address. These needs are requests which are sent off wrapped in the tears of grown men and grown women. They are reaching out for help, your help. If you only listen, you can make a difference – or not.

Make Group Coaching Your Time Adding Results Machine

Group Coaching makes some coaches and clients nervous. I’m not exactly sure what it is about sharing our deepest desires with a group of people that makes us sweat and shake. Do you think it’s simply the fear of judgment?

I have to admit stepping out from the sacred space of my one on one sessions and onto that conference line with a group of people awaiting my coaching left me feeling a little queasy at first too. The pleasure quickly took over and the feeling I just jumped off a high cliff edge subsided. Group Coaching could be your ticket to more time freedom in your life and quicker results for your clients.

Is that enough reason for you to bite the bullet and take a leap of faith with me?

I Would like to Own my Very Own Time Machine

What if I told you that I knew a secret that would allow you to have more time in your life, increase your new clients monthly (with no extra time from you) and get your clients to take more action?

Would you do whatever it took to invite that time machine into your life?

Well my friend the secret is Group Coaching. By becoming a group coach you can coach mass amounts or people at one time. This means you provide the same value as a coach and charge a slightly reduced coaching fee. In the one hour you would normally change one person’s life you transform many.

I Don’t Know What to do to Start a Group Session

I began my first group coaching by starting a mastermind group for my current clients. As part of their monthly coaching package they receive admission to a group coaching held on a free conference line (www.freeconferencecall.com). I hold this group the first week of each month. I began by picking a general life coaching topic that could apply to everyone. Topics that went well were time management, setting standards, health, relationships or anything I recognized was a common trend between my clients that month. During the call everyone introduces themselves and what they are working on in their life right now. At the end of the call we finish by setting a goal and commitment to be held accountable for throughout the month. It is as simple as that to get started.

How Does Group Coaching Add Time to my Life?

The Group Coaching call replaces one of my clients accountability check in calls each month. This means instead of coaching 15 people for 15 hours that week I now check in with all 15 in one to two hours.

Group Coaching sessions are open for new people to join each month. It is an easy, set way for me to invite new prospects to experience what it is like to receive coaching from me. This is also a live speaking testimonial for new clients to see the results my current clients are getting. The best part is that once my clients are ready to move on from coaching they choose to stay a part of the group, for accountability, at a small monthly fee. So I not only save that 15 hours a month coaching, I now save hours prospecting and marketing.

Does it Really Help my Clients with Their Results?

My clients have all come to know one another through our monthly meetings. They are able to collaborate and share resources in ways that are not available in one on one sessions. In many of our group coaching calls they will coach each other through encouragement, feedback or sometimes just listening to the other’s complain. You’re standards increase when you have more people to check in with on your commitments. I have also had clients find success through connecting with one another in compatible collaborations toward their goals.

Don’t Let Your Fear Keep You From Success

Did you know that fear and Excitement have the same genetic make up? Maybe that queasy feeling you labeled fear is excitement. Start to get excited about coaching a group. Weather you are coach or client, group coaching could be your ticket to a higher level of success.

You have a gift to share! The more you can reach at one time, the merrier. Invite everyone to set his or her Resolutions with you in a powerful accountability group. Start off your New Year with a Bang! It’s your time to Share and Shine.

Special Bonus – Learn 3 simple ways to become a life coach with the“30-Days to Become a Coach” video toolkit when you fill in the form at the top right and click the “Watch The Videos Now” button. You’ll learn how to change your client’s life in 45 minutes.

How to Get Coaching Clients: Freebies

How to get coaching clients is one of the most commonly asked questions by new coaches. All coaches, experienced or rookie, want to learn more about how to get coaching clients. The secret to being successful is to get more clients. But, how do you do that?

There are many ways to market for more clients, but one of the best ways is on the Internet. People will find your website, read about how wonderful and extraordinary you are, and immediately sign up for your services, right?

Not really. Most people won’t buy coaching services off a website. It’s a great place to get your name and message out, but a website fails miserably as a sales closer.

How to Get Coaching Clients – Freebies!

The best way to get prospective customers to buy from your website is to give your services away for free. That’s right – I said FOR FREE! Freebies are the perfect way to introduce your services to potential clients. How to get coaching clients is all about giving them a taste of what you can do for them.

3 Free Offers from a Coach

  • Free coaching session
  • E-book or some valuable material related to your system of coaching
  • Newsletter

If you are giving away e-books or newsletters, make sure they contain valuable information. Teaser material doesn’t work – people can see crap a mile away! People who are searching for coaches, demand value even though they understand that freebies are a marketing ploy. If you show them something of value, you get people believing that your services are valuable. That’s how to get a coaching client!

If you are giving away a free session, you have to make your coaching sound valuable. Say something like, “Let me show you how you can double your sales.” Or say, “Let me show you ways to ace your next interview.” Or, “Let me show you three special tips to help you lose five pounds this week.” Give them a reason to accept your free offer.

Your freebie should be easy to obtain. If it is a free e-book, newsletter, or informational material, they should be able to easily download it right off your website. There is no doubt some people will just be scouring the Internet for free stuff and once they get their free download, you will never hear from them again. However, if you provided something informative and valuable to read, those people who are serious about hiring a coach will want to find out more about your services.

If you are offering free coaching samples, make it easy for them to contact you; your e-mail or direct phone number should be prominently displayed on your website. If they have to search around for it, you may lose them. Everyone online has ADD!

Why Give Away Free Services or Information?

Because you will get more clients, that’s why!

For as long as you coach, you will be asking the question: How to get coaching clients? Trying new promotional strategies and perfecting old ways will be a constant for as long as you own your business. If you haven’t tried giving away freebies, you haven’t tried one of the best ways to solve the problem of how to get coaching clients.

Making freebies an integral part of your promotional activities will continue to pay dividends and help push your business to new levels. Everyone loves something for free, and you’ll love them because they will help you get clients, expand your coaching practice, and make you more money!

SPECIAL BONUS — If you would like step-by-step blueprints for generating a massive income from high paying coaching clients, I invite you to claim your FREE ACCESS to the “Life Coach Salary Secrets”video toolkit. Go HERE to get it FREE.
