A Successful Personal Fitness Coach Puts Mind over Matter

Being a personal fitness coach isn’t just about understanding diet and exercise. It is all about putting mind over matter. You know this is true if you have ever tried to get in shape or lose a bunch of weight. You set your goal, lay out your plan, and nothing happens. Nothing happens because you have not put the power of your subconscious mind to work.

Your Drive for Consistency Makes Fitness Impossible

Your subconscious mind is driven to make your life consistent with your self-image. If you want to be fit and your subconscious believes that you are out of shape and just a little bit chubby, it will drive you to stay that way, even if you consciously would like to be fit. As a personal fitness coach, this also applies to your clients. Unless you can convince your clients’ subconscious mind that they are slim and trim, they will remain as they are – out of shape and very frustrated.

Applying the Greatest Discovery of the Last Century

The good news, as a personal fitness coach, is that you can do just that. William James said that the greatest discovery of the last century is that your subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between something that is vividly imagined and something that actually happened. Applying this to personal fitness means that, as a coach, if you have your client vividly imagine being fit, after a while their subconscious mind will believe it and kick in to make their actions consistent with that “reality”. Suddenly, exercise and healthy diet become completely natural, and so does losing weight and being fit. In fact with sufficient reinforcement, it becomes harder to not exercise than to exercise.

The Personal Fitness Coach as Magician not Slave Driver

By changing your client’s self-image to slim, trim and healthy, you are able to help them achieve their goals without constantly beating them up. Getting and being in shape is now a pleasant and positive experience. This further reinforces their desired behavior. Follow these guidelines and what do you have? You have a formula for success that goes way beyond personal fitness coaching. Think about it. Suddenly you have the formula for success in personal fitness, financial security and romantic relationships. It is all their in the subconscious mind

Fitness Coaching Jobs: Stay Active While You Work

Fitness coaching jobs offer the opportunity to make good money and stay active while you work. In these difficult economic times, jobs can be hard to find. However, with an aging population looking to stay active, and a increased interest in battling obesity, the demand for fitness and health trainers continues to increase. People want to stay healthy, age slowly, and remain in good physical condition. Many people realize that knowledgeable coaching is essential when pursuing their healthy lifestyle goals.

Becoming a Coach

To ensure success in the health and training field, there are some important considerations before you begin your career and look for fitness coaching jobs. Though the field is growing and plenty of opportunities exist, it is an extremely competitive industry. To have the best opportunity to succeed in the field, the following considerations are important:

* Be fit. No one wants to hire a trainer who is not in top shape. Your clients will look to you for inspiration.

* Get educated and certified. There are many schools where you can take courses and earn a degree. There are also several agencies that offer certification; two of the top certifications to consider are from NCSA and ACSM.

* When interviewing with an employer or meeting with a client, always be presentable. Dress the part, whether it is in attire for the gym or for the interview room.

Finding Fitness Coaching Jobs

There are two routes to take when deciding on a fitness coaching job. You can look for employment and work as an employee for a company. The other route to take is to start your own business. If you go the self-employment route, you should be aware that it will require far more work and responsibility than working for someone else. You need to worry about marketing, scheduling, taxes, and other administrative duties. These tasks and responsibilities often take up more time than you spend with clients. Working for yourself offers you the freedom to run your business in the manner you choose, but it is important to understand that it involves more time and effort than merely being an employee.

What Do You Do as a Coach?

As a health and exercise coach, you will evaluate, educate, motivate, and inspire people of all ages and abilities to improve and maintain their physical condition. You are part salesperson, part teacher, part friend, and part coach. You may teach classes or work with clients one-on-one. You can work in a gym or visit clients in their homes. Fitness coaching jobs come in all shapes and sizes; you can create your own job description.

Salary and Possibilities.

Fitness coaching jobs offer competitive salaries, room for advancement and growth, and the opportunity to work part-time. According to salary.com, the median salary for personal and health trainers ranges between $38,000 and $65,000 per year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the field will grow by 29% over the next ten years. They also report that 40% of all personal trainers work part time while trainers who are self-employed earn more than those who work for businesses and facilities.

Fitness is a lucrative and dynamic field because demand is growing, salary potential is good, and opportunity for advancement is strong. Fitness coaching jobs are great for those with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to stay in peak physical condition. Considering this field for your career is one of the healthiest and smartest choices you can make.

The Ultimate Goal of Every Fitness Coach

The ultimate goal of every fitness coach is to help their clients achieve a life of true balance. Or as the ancient Greeks would say: a sound mind in a sound body. This balanced approach is what sets fitness coaching apart from sports coaches and physical training.

A Knowledge of Physiology and Nutrition Are Fundamental

Obviously every fitness coach must have profound knowledge in the areas of human physiology, healthful practices and nutrition. Guided exercise and guided meditation, coupled with the latest in detoxification and healthy nutrition are a must. While many fitness coaches may be drawn to extremes in these areas – whether ancient or modern – I prefer a more moderate path, eating from the whole spectrum of foods and exercising in moderation – focusing on long term results and longevity.

The Fitness Coach Uses Accountability Coaching to Identify and Overcome Barriers to Action

Accountability coaching calls the client to a higher standard of commitment. In the process the client comes face to face with themselves and their willingness to settle for less. Having established goals and commitments in absolute clarity the fitness coach helps the client work back along the chain of decisions that form their actions, and helps them to choose at the most fundamental level to commit and to act to achieve their goals of health and fitness.

Then They Use Strategy Coaching to Release the Body and Mind for Focus and Freedom

In this stage the coach helps the client to address their four fundamental needs: the needs for love and connection, significance, variety, and certainty. And then to understand at the deepest level that by balancing the satisfaction of these needs, the client can develop self-reinforcing behavior that will assure that exercises are always done, nutritious diets are always followed, and meditation and peace of mind become the inevitable results of being alive.

Tell Me How To Become A Strength Coach

Please tell me how to become a strength coach. Well, there is a traditional route and then there is not so traditional route to follow. With either approach, the best way to learn how to become a strengthening coach is to simply start reading about different topics in this field.

The strength of the coach is in his or her experience of how to apply the techniques of building strength to the client.

How To Become A Strength Coach Takes Commitment

Whether you learn how to become a strength coach through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or you’ve learned through the practice of trial and error to become an effective coach takes time and commitment. While following the NSCA guidelines to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) may be a demanding task, the pay offs are rewarding.

The other route to obtaining a degree of understanding of how to become a strength coach is by practicing this profession on a daily basis as a coach. By taking the time and reading, practicing, and correcting the flaws discovered while practicing and then implementing these changes repeating them again and again until a level of proficiency is reached.

Hard Work Makes For A Great Payoff

One of the fastest ways I have been able to teach my clients how to become a strength coach themselves is by demanding them to work hard and to never quit. Coaching is a learned skill. JTS Advisors provides all the coaching skills one needs to become a great coach. It is hard work, but the payoff is enormous. From there, it is up to the coach to decide on the niche or subject that the coach wishes to study and then coach on.
A simple format would be to train with weights three days a week as in Mon/Wed/Friday format with two cardio days and a solid focus on nutritional timing. Quality and potion sizes of your food are also going to be key in your recovery. Eat six small meals spread out through the day and stay hydrated.

How to Become a Fitness Coach When You’re Overweight

If you do strictly phone coaching, the answer to how to become a fitness coach when you’ve got a few extra pounds is easy. But what if you do face-to-face coaching? Or just have integrity around who you say you are? Then it’s not as easy to say you became a fitness coach after overcoming your own obstacles.

How To Become a Fitness Coach Who Walks Your Talk

If you have an extra 10 pounds or so around the middle, chances are that you have an issue with fitness at some level. Whatever that issue is that keeps you from achieving your goals, is probably the same issue that will keep your clients from achieving theirs. I’ve found that the best way to learn how to become a fitness coach, or any other type of coach for that matter, is to break through your own limitations. Unless you’re alright with being mediocre.

3 Fitness Coach Traps To Avoid

1. Do more sit-ups to get rid of a flabby stomach. No matter how strong someone’s abdominals are, no one will see them if they are covered with a layer of fat.

2. If someone is exercising every day, they will automatically lose weight. It doesn’t matter how much someone exercises, extra calories = extra fat. In fact, research studies have shown that low intensity exercise even increases appetite.

3. Just Do It! How to become a fitness coach is more than being a drill sergeant. People do what they do because they are getting their needs met. Certainty plays a big role in weight loss, as most people get a lot of comfort from the foods they eat and the people they eat them with. Make sure you empower your clients so that their needs are being met at a higher level as they step into their new lifestyle.

What Makes a Good Personal Fitness Coach?

Yesterday a client of mine asked me if I knew of a good personal fitness coach. Now, this is a personal topic for me, as a Coach and as a fitness junkie. Personal fitness coaches have a responsibility to up hold a higher standard of moral and ethical behavior. People trust these coaches to guide them to a healthier, fun filled and more fruitful life style.

How Does a Personal Fitness Coach Get Results?

First of all, a personal fitness coach emphasizes personal accountability. Without accountability nothing happens. Yes, you might get some result, lose a few pounds, or lose a few inches here and there, but let’s be real. The truly awesome personal fitness coaches conduct assessments; develop a strategy and then implement a plan of action. It’s within this action plan and the accountability that the changes in life style take place.

You see, we will often do more for others than we will ever do for ourselves. For instance, if you set a plan to get up and run at 5 a.m. in the morning and you’re not a morning person nor a runner…the only reason you’re getting out of your comfortable warm bed is if your personal fitness coach is waiting outside under the street light for you!

Get Out of The House And Into Your Life.

Nature has a way of giving us a sense of health and rejuvenation. A good personal fitness coach will tell you that having a treadmill in your house or doing yoga in your home is fine, but nothing beats being outdoors. Feeling the wind on your face and the warmth of the sun on your back is irreplaceable. Moving your body throughout many different plains of motions will create the greatest results. So, run, jump, climb and pull yourself through every park, beach or obstacle on the street. Have fun, enjoy your life and introduce someone to your knew life of motion.

My Personal Weight Loss Coach Says I Have To Starve Myself

Let Your Clients Say "My Personal Weight Loss Coach Is The Best" | Image by TajpharmaWhen I hear people say, “My personal weight loss coach says I have to starve myself to have a great body,” it makes my blood boil. If you are a weight loss coach who preaches this mis-information your personal clients are likely to get fatter instead of thinner. Your clients will live in a state of feeling deprived instead of feeling empowered.

There Are No Short-Cuts To Success

The basic laws of physics state that you must consume fewer calories than you burn in order to lose weight. Restrictive diets where people consume 1000-1200 calories a day are not sustainable over time and worse yet these diets put your body into a state of starvation. Your body feels that it must conserve energy in order to survive, and hence metabolism slows down. You burn fewer calories which make it easier to gain the weight back and often more when you go off your diet. In addition, I know too well from personal experience that focus is everything. If I focus on not eating chocolate, that is all I think of and want. It becomes an obsession.

How to Get Your Clients to Boast, “My Personal Weight Loss Coach Gets Results!”

There is no secret to long term weight loss success. The key is to change lifestyles, not diet. To get long term results, the process needs to be sustainable. Unfortunately, most people think that when they reach their weight loss goal they can go back to their old habits. I can’t think of any other area of coaching where someone thinks he can go back to his old habits once he achieves his goal. A far more empowering alternative is to hope that your clients say, “My personal weight loss coach helped me transform my old habits into a lifestyle I can live with for the rest of my life!” In that process, your clients become someone who is not only able to lose the excess weight, but get off the weight loss roller coaster permanently.

Hope you took some great value out of this post today! I’d love to hear your feedback, so make sure you leave a comment with your thoughts or questions. And also, you can click on the Twitter button below to retweet this article… Thank you!

Change takes time. My personal fitness coach was sharing with me that it often takes up to 6-8 weeks for the lights to go on in your exercise program. This is what is referred to as neurological muscular wiring. This is your bodies was of saying “Hey Buddy” we’re making some changes here.
The reality is if you want to lose weight, get fit or simply live a healthier lifestyle, then some basics need to be covered first. Take a look around you. More and more people are gaining weight. This includes children, teenagers, adults and even the elderly. As people reflect out into the social mirror of life, they begin to rationalize that their current weight, level of fitness isn’t that bad. Compared to what I ask? This is your life, how do you want to look, feel or perform?

Listen to Your Fitness Coach!

It all starts with a decision. Decide what you want and then find a coach that you can say” This is my personal fitness coach.” They will be the one to help you get where you want to go. So as your coach, let’s get started. This is the fun part, eating. Focus on portion sizes; this is the key in the beginning. You see the problem is too many calories in and not enough calories out…being burned during physical activity. Exercise alone will not fix this problem, that’s why we must emphasis nutrition first.

So now you ask, what do I eat?

Basically eat lean meats and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit like 2-3 pieces, little starch…maybe an ice cream scoop or two of the starches if any at all, and no added sugar. Keep your selections simple and remember your portion control.

My Personal Fitness Coach Says: Exercise

A personal exercise program that consist of daily walks, some full body movements 2-3 times per week like body squats, push-ups, sit-ups and a couple of sprints will do the trick. Follow this up with adequate hydration and significant sleeping patterns. Don’t forget to get your vitamin “D” by soaking up some of Mother Nature’s natural sunlight. How to Be a Personal Weight Loss Coach or a Fitness Coach that Transforms their Client

As a personal weight loss coach, it is your goal to help your clients lose weight and keep it off. One of the things you learn as a fitness coach or a personal weight loss coach is how important your clients’ thoughts are. How important are they to you as a fitness coach? For you, it’s all about cause and effect. Their old way of thinking is the cause, and their starting weight is the effect. Knowing these two things can be coaching gold for any personal weight loss coach.

To Find Out What Is Going On Inside Your Fitness Coach Client, Look At What Is Happening In Their Life On The Outside

.

Your personal weight loss coach client needs to be transformed on the inside. This means that your fitness coach client’s thoughts have created their reality. Your client’s thoughts on the inside will ALWAYS be reflected back on the outside. As a fitness coach, you know that your client can never get and KEEP the weight off without preparing themselves on the inside. So, this is the first place you need to focus on with them.

Your personal weight loss coach clients must have what it takes to fight the mental match for keeping the weight off on the outside. To create a different body, they must become a different person. They need take different actions and make choices that will cause the effect they are looking for. As their fitness coach, you can show them how to program these actions and choices into their everyday life.

Your Personal Weight Loss Coach Clients Must Understand This Is A Journey

.

Your personal weight loss coach clients need to view keeping the weight off like flying in an airplane. When you fly to any destination, you will be off-course 99% of the time. Despite this, you are confident you will reach your destination. The same goes for their journey with you as their fitness coach. Weight loss is their destination, they are the plane and you, their fitness coach, are the navigator. Though the journey isn’t guaranteed, if they just keep going they will eventually get to where they want to be.

No matter how well you help your personal weight loss coach client plan their lifestyle, there will be challenges daily. They will have to make corrections when they get off track. They will have good days and bad days. These are the experiences that will be required for them to become the person they need to become to keep the weight off. When they become this person, however, they will keep the weight off the rest of their lives and they will have you, their fitness coach, to thank for it.

Become A Weight Loss Coach (Fitness Coach) That Keeps Your Client’s Weight Off

When you become a weight loss coach or fitness coach, your long-term goal is to help your client’s keep the weight off.  Your client’s comfort zones drive their behavior on a subconscious level.  Become a weight loss coach who is aware of your clients’ comfort zones.  Your clients may recognize that if they start making healthier choices they will get the weight loss results they want, but they might be out of their comfort zone.  How would a successful fitness coach handle this challenge?

Become a Weight Loss Coach (Fitness Coach) That Isn’t Satisfied With Short-Term Results

.

One successful fitness coach told me an interesting story.  It’s about a married woman that wanted to lose weight.  She hired a fitness coach and lost weight, but then she started getting unwanted attention from men other than her husband.  She ended up putting the weight back on.  She wasn’t comfortable with who she became after losing the weight.  Your fitness coach clients will have the similar challenge of having to reinvent themselves to keep the weight off.

Become a Weight Loss Coach (Fitness Coach) That Helps Your Client Reinvent Themselves

.

When you become a weight loss coach, you need to be aware of your client’s comfort zones.  Your fitness coach clients may not take action because their subconscious mind may prevent them from doing so.  In the story, the person the woman became was out of her comfort zone.  Her comfort zone drove her behavior and she stopped making healthy choices.  When your client steps out of their comfort zone, their instinct will be to step back into their comfort zone.  As a fitness coach, if you can keep them out of their comfort zone long enough, it will become their new identity.  Become a weight loss coach that helps your clients reinvent themselves.  Give all your clients the tools mentally and physically to reinvent their lives forever.
