Conflict coaching involves coaching one or more parties in a conflict so that they are able to defuse or resolve the conflict. It is not negotiating, nor negotiating training. Like all coaching, it involves dealing with the obvious and the internal. It involves managing interactions and intra-actions. It is a very much needed, yet a seldom taught capability. Here are three dimensions of this science and art.

Conflicts Arising from Behavioral Styles

People have been classifying people according to behavioral style for a very long time. Actually thousands of years, since the first person recognized for doing this was Hippocrates. And whether you categorize people by their D-I-S-C patterns, or as Drivers – Analyticals – Expressives – Amiables, peoples’ behavioral styles fall into some variation of four basic groupings. The problem arises when people are thrown together without an understanding of or an appreciation of value of the style options. The solution is to make these matters clear and to teach everyone how to successfully adjust their own behavior to work well with the others.

Conflict Coaching to Resolve Conflicting Values

Another important area of conflict coaching involves understanding the fundamental values that drive the behavior of the various people involved in the conflict. Whether driven by Social, Traditional, Theoretical, Utilitarian, Individualistic or Aesthetic values – or a particular combination of them – differences in driving values can lead to conflict. An understanding of these driving forces and the differences in each person’s values can go a long way to increase understanding and lower conflict.

When Fundamental Needs Form the Basis for the Conflict

When people come to situations with an imbalance in satisfying fundamental needs internal and external conflict usually result. This is a particularly volatile situation, since internal imbalance can generate conflict within the group in a way that does not make any sense to most of the members of the group. What is a Wellness Coach?

Before considering how to become a wellness coach it might help to understand what a wellness coach is. A wellness coach is a blend of many skills such as: lifestyle, fitness, health, wellness and nutrition coach as well as exercise, sleep and stress management counselor. As a wellness coach you can have your own business, work online from home, at fitness centers, as part of a corporate wellness team, or in medical facilities if you have the proper requirements.

How to Become a Wellness Coach? – Training Needed

  1. Wellness coaching is not necessarily a licensed profession. However, many coaches become certified through life coach courses.
  2. There are many training programs available online and off. Some programs are completed in about 30 to 50 hours of study, followed by a multiple choice exam which the student mails to the school for final grading. Others are more extensive and take a year to complete.

  • Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN): They offer a one year course, majoring on health, lifestyle and nutrition with some business training. They also have an option for a second year (which is extended studies more on the business side of having a coaching practice) which is included in the initial tuition. Their course is completely on-line and is very user-friendly and flexible.
  • The Spencer Institute: They provide holistic, nutrition and wellness life coach training as well as sports psychology training programs.

4.  Be sure to check out the curriculum to make sure it is what you are most interested in. Here are a few topics you will most likely study: the importance of sleep, nutrition, health and exercise, understanding stress and the affects it has on the body as well as basic coaching skills.

Continuing Education

  • Once you know how to become a wellness coach and have been certified be sure you are aware of any requirements to maintain your wellness coach certification. Many organizations require that you get recertified after a certain time depending on your job requirements.
  • If you are already a health care or fitness professional you may want to continue your training by completing a life coach training program or a wellness and health coach training course.

Legal

5 Steps To Success In Conflict Coaching

Conflict coaching skills are much more essential than most people realize. Conflict doesn’t go just go away like a disagreement. Conflict occurs when someone perceives that one or more of his survival needs is being threatened. As tough as it sounds, conflict coaching can turn this challenge into an opportunity for growth.

Conflict Coaching Essentials

1. Prepare or die. Make sure your client isn’t too hungry, angry, tired or lonely before going into the meeting.
2. Ambience is everything. Make sure that your client sets the stage so that all parties are prepared for the meeting and that the meeting is located in a comfortable place where interruptions are minimized.
3. Begin with the end in mind. Make sure your client is clear on his outcome.
4. Seek first to understand. Make sure your client remembers to ask clarifying questions so that he understands the other’s view. Understanding is not the same as agreeing, but until you can come alongside someone and see their view you are only setting the stage for a fist fight.
5. Use “I” statements. Make sure your client keeps an open mind, expresses himself clearly and concisely, and is able to remain open to all possibilities placed on the table.

Check Your Guns At the Bar

In some states you can bring a gun into a bar, but you need to check it with the bartender first. In conflict coaching, make sure your conflict coach clients stay calm and listen more than they speak. You don’t want a loaded mouth going off in the middle of a meeting and shedding blood. Help your clients understand the power of their words, either to build relationships and trust or to destroy. Although these skills don’t come easily for most people, practice makes better. As long as no one really shoots off their mouth too much there is always the opportunity to table the discussion until tempers cool off and try again after a break.

Process to Use With Clients

Because it’s important to approach the client as a whole person, you can begin by taking him/her on a self discovery journey. Helping the client find their innate values, talents and strengths allows them to clarify what it is they truly want in their lives.

Then you can work with your client to develop a focused wellness plan that is in alignment with his/her core values. The plan includes realistic goals, action steps to reach the goals, and integration of new behaviors into their life. You provide support and understanding in a non-judgmental way, and celebrate when they achieve results.

There are a variety of careers in wellness coaching available to those who have experience in the wellness industry and the desire to work with individuals who are ready to become healthy and live more fulfilled lives.
