Life Coach Tips To Avoid “Shiny Object Syndrome”

September 6th, 2010

If you're new here, you may want to check out my FREE video toolkit Secrets to Higher Coaching Income. Thanks for visiting!

If anyone ever needed life coach tips, it’s now. With all the information and opportunity out there right now, it’s almost impossible to focus on one thing. The worst part of this syndrome is that high achievers are at the greatest risk. Since the key to success is based on the ability to focus, you’ll need a cure for Shiny Object Syndrome.

What is Shiny Object Syndrome?

.

Shiny Object Syndrome is the inability to focus on a single task or project in the midst of a sea of other enticing objects. Just like a fish is attracted to a shiny lure, we can be easily attracted to random objects. Some of these things appear to be great opportunities or big problems. In either case, these shiny objects take us off track.

Life Coach Tips To Maintain Focus In the Murky Sea Of Life

.

One of the most effective life coach tips is stay on track is accountability. Train your coaching clients to commit to actions that will take them closer to their goal, and let nothing come up to stop them. This prevents them from allowing the symptoms of Shiny Object Syndrome that include self talk such as, “I have a better opportunity”, “I didn’t have time because something else came up” or “I have so many great ideas I don’t know where to start.” If nothing else, these consistent steps toward their goals will eventually get them closer to the results they are looking for.

Another of the life coach tips that are effective in protecting your clients from Shiny Object Syndrome is to have them create a compelling vision. There is an old story about three works at a construction site, working at a pile of stones. An observer asked what they were doing. The first workers said he was breaking rocks. The second said he was making a living. The third replied that he was building a cathedral. Vision or sense of purpose is key to staying on course through the enticing obstacles that come up in our lives.

Hope you took some great value out of this post today! I’d love to hear your feedback, so make sure you leave a comment with your thoughts or questions. And also, you can click on the Twitter button below to retweet this article… Thank you!

Life Coach Tips: How Do You Use Serendipity?

July 29th, 2010

Life Coach Tips How to use SerendipitySerendipity often plays a big role in how a life coach tips the scales toward success for a client. In a recent quote from A.Word.A.Day (http://wordsmith.org/awad), author Yahia Lababidi says “Like cars in amusement parks, our direction is often determined through collisions.” As coaches, our starting point is always to work with our clients to develop their sense of direction toward their goals. But everyone has collisions that knock them off the path they plan to pursue. Serendipity plays a big part in the direction we end up taking. So, how can you use serendipity to benefit your clients?

Keep an eye on the big picture

.

One way a life coach tips the scales in a client’s favor is to keep an eye on everything that is happening in your client’s life–the expected, the unexpected, and the interaction between them. You have a unique perspective into how the client is, or isn’t, producing the results he wants. Most people have blind spots that limit their ability to understand or even to see the multi-dimensionality of how results are produced, particularly if there is no direct cause and effect. Coach your client to become aware of his expectations and his feelings at multiple levels. Then, when serendipity challenges his plans, help him find the positive outcomes of those unavoidable and unexpected collisions we all experience on a day to day basis.

A life coach tips the scales towards opportunity

.

Collision, serendipity, accidents–whatever word you use, it’s also the word for opportunity. Something unexpected happens and suddenly there is an opening for new ways of thinking, new ways of taking action, and new kinds of results. But often, a client will be so focused on what he thinks he needs to do, or so committed to whatever ideas he has, he won’t see the opportunity that serendipity has put right in front of him. When opportunity knocks, a life coach tips the client toward the new path and helps him see both the opportunities he will miss out on if he clings to the familiar and the opportunities he has if he opens the door.

Life Coaching Tips: Re-Establishing Rapport When You Screw it Up

June 26th, 2010

life coaching tips to help you get clientsLife coaching tips are not effective if they are not heard by your coaching clients. You will fail to make a difference in the life of your client by minding your manners. The best tips will fall to the ground. Why?  Freud himself said that you need to use intensity to be effective. Your coaching clients don’t need another conversation; they need life change and transformation. But how do you regain rapport if you go too far?

Life Coaching Tips: Being Proper and Professional Will Not Get You Clients

1

This is one of the most dangerous coaching myths. Unless you happen to have some clients who are extremely lonely and just need a friend, your clients pay you to get results. Getting results for your clients is the only way to get more clients. If you get results for your clients, even if they don’t “like” what you say, they will respect if not love you for it. I used to abruptly but politely hang up on my own mentor when I didn’t like what she said to me. We laugh about it now, because I got results and she never took it personally.

What If You Go Too Far and Your Client Gets Mad?

1

The best life coaching tips are to realize that when people get angry, they usually are responding to a loss of a need for significance. You can always “backpedal” and give your client some significance if you need to. Saying something like, “I know that’s not you. It’s just how you’re showing up right now,” has gotten me out of trouble a few times. Coming from a position of absolute love, caring and respect for your client will help you regain rapport quickly. If you really don’t respect your client it will be tough to make a come back.

Recently I was at an event where several of clients publicly acknowledged me for the audacity I had to say some things that sounded quite terrible out of context. It was quite obvious it was those key phrases that had made a lasting impact on their lives. By risking it all, everyone won.

Life Coaching Tips: Tough Love

June 24th, 2010

Life coaching tips might involve some tough love for your clients ©KatiyaThere are many life coaching tips on how to establish rapport with your clients.  And by all means, it is a very important skill.  But should you ever intentionally break rapport?  Is there a right way to do it?  What if your client stops liking you and decides to quit?  It all comes down to how committed you are to your coaching client and getting the results they want.

Life Coaching Tips:  How to Break Rapport Without Loosing Your Client

The most important life coaching tips to breaking rapport with your client is to pre-frame your sessions by letting your clients that you are willing to be there for them and what they want to achieve in their life.  No one else will do that for them.  There is an unspoken agreement between most friends, lovers, and families that says, “We will make sure you stay safe by not allowing you to fly too high.”

An Effective Life Coach Must Not Care
To be truly effective, a life coach must not be attached to the coaching relationship.  If you need your clients for any reason, you will not be able to serve them to the highest degree.  If you need them to continue because they help pay the bills, you will bind your own hands in what you are able to accomplish.  You are better off working in a fast food chain to support yourself than to be attached to a coaching client for personal gain.

The other life coaching tips for effectively breaking rapport are to come from a position of total love, caring, and dedication to your client.  You must be completely detached of their progress, then give 110%.  Your best coaching, strategy and other tips.  Don’t leave anything unsaid, because it is really up to you.  Becoming a life coach who is willing to risk their own needs getting met to serve someone else is truly priceless in today’s world of political correctness.

Give this strategy a try and see for yourself that it works.   If you liked this coaching tip, leave a comment
or use the handy bookmark buttons below to share it with others on Facebook, Twitter, Digg, etc. Thanks!

Coaching Techniques to Get Your Clients to Tell You What They Really Want From Their Coaching Session: Life Coach Tips to Help You Get Into Your Clients’ Worlds

September 24th, 2009

Life Coaching Techniques That Help You to Meet Your Clients’ Needs, Especially When they Aren’t Good at Communicating

e

Today I was asked, “When there is cultural barrier or if clients are shy, what coaching techniques are effective at getting your client to open up and communicate the needs they need meet in their coaching session? What coaching tips to do have to get me past the awkward silence when a client can’t think of anything they want to work on?” The first life coach tips I offered him was to stop buying into these clients’ stories, and then I shared these coaching techniques with him.

Life Coach Tips to Get Into Your Clients’ Heads

e

Life Coaching Techniques #1: Be sure you’ve gained rapport with your client. Get to know them by asking them about themselves. The most important aspect of these life coach tips is to find something that you really admire about the client. Compliment them, back it up with the reason you admire that quality or achievement, and then ask them to share how they were able achieve that outcome.

Life Coaching Techniques #2: Go back to their goals. The reason this coach was having trouble was that his client didn’t have ambitious goals, their goals would be achieved with or without coaching. So there wasn’t anything to discuss. Make sure your clients have S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Ambitious, have a Reason, and Time frame to achieve that goal by. Once you know what goals that matter to your clients, you have accessed their emotions. They key to successful coaching is to take people beyond an ordinary conversation and into innermost desires. Without these life coach tips you are not going to be able to move people past their greatest fears and frustrations and toward their greatest aspirations.

Life Coaching Techniques #3: Be the one person who is willing to take a stand for and believe in the possibilities. The most important life coach tips are to not buy into their “stories” and to let them know when they are running their usual pattern. For example, someone who comes up with goals that are not ambitious and doesn’t have any idea about what they want to work on in a coaching session may really be living in fear of loosing certainty or significance. They may lack confidence in their own abilities, not want to loose face in front of their peers, or just fear making any move into the “unknown.” Let your client know what they are doing, help them see what it is costing them, and provide an empowering alternative.

Implement These Life Coach Tips to Make a Difference in Your Clients’ Lives

e

With these three coaching techniques you will be able to crack the toughest nut open, and start making a difference in that person’s life. As you use these life coach tips, make sure you remember that you are the leader. You set the pace and it is your job as their coach to find out how to get the results they really want.

How to Become a Motivational Coach: Master Coach Life Coach Tips to Help You Succeed

June 2nd, 2009

Become a Motivational Coach by Implementing These Life Coach Tips

These life coach tips are the fastest way to become a motivational coach, or any other type of coach for that matter.  These are the life coach tips that all master coaches use.  It does not matter where you are, if you want to become a motivational coach or a master motivational coach, you’ll need to:

1. Set a clear GOAL:  The first of these life coach tips is important because the more clear you are on the specifics of your goal and the reasons why you want to achieve this goal, the greater the motivation you’ll have achieve it.  Instead of making a goal to become a motivational coach, you’ll want to be more specific.  You might have the goal to become a motivational coach who powerfully impacts the lives of 30 clients per month.  Next, associate massive pleasure to achieving the goal and massive pain if you don’t.

2. Take MASSIVE action:  You may not know everything you need to do, but the key is to get started.  For example, to become a motivational coach you can start by setting free sessions, talking to other coaches, and coaching friends.  Don’t become a knowledgeable fool; take action.  Intellectual mastery without action is worthless, but massive action with even a little knowledge is priceless.

3. Take note of your RESULTS: Get feedback from clients and yourself.  Get life coach tips about what’s working, what’s great, what’s not great.

4. Revise your PLAN:  This is the most crucial aspect of these life coach tips.  Use the feedback and revise your plan based on the new information.

A Famous Example of These Life Coach Tips in Action

Colonel Harland Sanders used these ‘life coach tips’ and had great results.  In 1896 Sanders’ father died forcing his mother to enter the work-force.  At the young age of six Sanders was tasked with looking after his younger siblings and cooking many of the family’s meals.  In a years time he had mastered several dishes.  Over the next 30 years Sanders held many jobs but his passion for cooking remained.  In 1930, while working at a service station, Sanders began cooking for hungry travelers.  Word spread and visitors would come from near and far just for a taste of Sanders’ food.  As the popularity of his meals grew Sanders moved across the street in order to increase his capacity.  Over the next ten years he perfected his cooking technique and his secret blend of eleven spices.  In 1955, Sanders, confident in the quality of his recipe, devoted himself to franchising his business.  Less than ten years later he had over 600 restaurants in the US and Canada.  Even though Sanders dabbled in other professions he returned to his chicken recipe, knowing it was worth something.  He started out cooking from a service station, but revised his plans to accommodate more people.  He then took massive action to franchise his business.  Without a doubt, he was laughed at at first, but then he reviewed and revised his approach.  With tenacity and time he was able share his chicken with more people than he thought possible.  Sanders didn’t have the best plan, but the massive action he took made up for it.  The same will work for you in your quest to become a master motivational coach.

Life Coach Tips for Enrolling Anyone into Coaching: Become a Life Coach Who Gets People to Say Yes to Coaching and Yes to Their own Goals

May 28th, 2009

When You Become a Life Coach You’ll Need Life Coach Tips on How to Enroll Anyone into Coaching With You

Following these simple life coach tips will help you become a life coach who can enroll anyone into coaching.  The easiest way to start is by offering a free coaching session.  When you become a life coach who provides value and follows these simple life coach tips, you will be able to start filling your schedule with paying clients.

One of The Simple Life Coach Tips Find Out What Are Their Goals?

The first of these life coach tips is to find out what their goals are.  They key is to become a life coach who understands what a persons goals are in such detail that the goal starts to live and breath between you and your client.  The goal becomes a reality at this moment, instead of an idea.  When you get this type of clarity around a goal, you will know it and more importantly your client will know it, too.

Become a Life Coach Who Can Discover What Needs Will be Fulfilled… Second of The Life Coach Tips

The second of these life coach tips is to find out which needs will be fulfilled at a higher level by achieving that goal.  The four basic needs are certainty, variety, love/connection and significance.  For example, someone who wants to make $10K/ month might feel that his need for certainty, variety, and significance would be met at a higher level by achieving this goal.  His need for certainty will be met at a higher level because he will have more financial security.  His need for variety might be met at a higher level because he will be able to travel more often, and he will feel more significant because he will be able to pay for his children’s college tuitions.  Become a life coach who helps your clients understand how their needs will be affected.  This will provide motivation to make changes.

Don’t forget to become a life coach who helps their clients find out what they fear they will have to give up in order to achieve their goals.  This fear might hold them back from succeeding.

Final of The Life Coach Tips: Become a Life Coach Who Can Close the Gap

The final step in these life coach tips is to become a life coach who closes the gap by showing clients how great their life will look from the perspective of meeting their needs at a higher level, and how it’s likely to turn out if they don’t.  Once they have a clear picture ask them, “If you had the strategy to help you overcome the obstacles that you are likely to come across and accountability to make sure you stayed on track, making sure your activities would produce results and not just activity to “look busy”…What would that be worth to you?”

If they don’t say “priceless”, either their goals aren’t big enough, they don’t believe it’s really possible or they just don’t feel that they are in control of their lives.  Become a life coach who helps them get past these obstacles so they can say yes to their goals, and yes to coaching.  Then they will be receptive to your life coach tips and making a positive change in their own lives.

Becoming a Life Coach: Life Coach Tips to Establish Instant Rapport With Your Clients

February 25th, 2009

Get Even the Most Reserved People to Warm up to You Using These Seven Simple Life Coach Tips

Becoming a life coach isn’t always as easy as it seems. What happens when you begin a session and feel like your client is not engaged?  You’re getting one word answers to your open-ended questions, and you start to feel panicky.  Relax, and enjoy these seven simple life coach tips that will immediately ease your strain upon the road to becoming a life coach.

Life coach tips #1: When speaking, match pitch and rhythm with their tone – on an unconscious level this is familiar to them and will help them feel more at ease. This will also help you get yourself out of your own head, because becoming a life coach is about being able to truly see the world from your clients’ perspective.

Life coach tips #2: If you are doing a face to face session, match body language. Again this is something that your client unconsciously relates to.

Life coach tips #3: Smile. Even if you are on the phone. The warmth you generate will come through.

Life coach tips #4: Set the right intentions. Get yourself into the state where your number one intention is to help and serve your client. Becoming a life coach is about the client, their goals, and needs. Everyone has their b.s. detector up pretty high these days. Don’t think you can fake it.

Life coach tips #5: Be a mirror for your clients’ responses. Repeat back to them what they have shared suing their precise working and terminology. They will know that you are listening, and you understand them. This will also help you in becoming a life coach; and understanding your clients.

Life coach tips #6: Refer to DISC or other assessment results. You will have instant access to your clients’ personality type, values, and how to communicate in their style.

Life coach tips #7: If you are nervous, it usually means you are focusing on yourself and your needs. Becoming a life coach means you need to feel competent in your abilities? You need to know yourself as someone who really offers value.  Use your body’s feedback to shift your focus onto your client, and remember…it’s not about you.

So if feel like you are having difficulty establishing rapport, remember these 6 simple tips and you will find yourself back on track before you know it.
