5 Life Coach Tips For Creating An Outstanding New Year

Life Coach Tips To Make A Difference In 2011 | Image by crazy-frankensteinIf you want your life coaching clients get off to a great start for the New Year, you’ll want life coach tips that are specifically designed for this transitional season. With all that is fresh and new, it makes sense to have some powerful tips get your clients moving toward their dreams. Here are my top 5 tips.

Life Coach Tips To Make A Difference In 2011

1. Ask your clients what was great about 2010 and celebrate their wins. As their coach, you’ll want to find out what they want more of or to continue doing in the New Year.
2. Clear the slate from anything in 2010 that was incomplete and needs to be cleaned up or tossed away. Give your clients to start the New Year fresh without carrying extra baggage and guilt.
3. Find out what your life coach clients want to achieve. What would be ambitious? What would be exciting? What difference do they want to make in their own lives and in the lives of others?
4. Create a plan to achieve their goals. Help your clients create the 10K foot view from the earth so they can get an overview of what needs to happen. It’s easier to see the lay of the land from an airplane than it is the ground.

The Grandfather Of All Life Coach Tips

5. The best life coach tip is to have your clients steal away for 24 hours of solitude so they can create the life the really want to create. Most people won’t do this, because there are too many obstacles in their daily lives to get away. This is exactly the reason why getting away is key. It’s hard to create something new when you are surrounded by your usual conversations, limitations, and environment. Have your clients get away from everything in their current life so they can create a vision with a clean piece of paper, and truly get a fresh start to the New Year.

Life Coach Tips: The Biggest Problem With Being Present

Life Coach Tips No One Mentioned: Being Present Comes With A Cost | Image by SequenceWeb

Of all the life coach tips I thought that the key to success was being focused and present, but I think I got it wrong. I thought if I really wanted to take my life to the next level, all I had to do was to bring myself to the present whenever I drifted off somewhere else.

Instead of having more quality time with my family and better results with work, I became exhausted before I broke through to the other side. Here are some tips so you don’t have to go through the same thing.

Life Coach Tips No One Mentioned: Being Present Comes With A Cost

If you want to be truly present and focused in the moment, you have to put up some boundaries. Some of these boundaries go up easier than others. For example, when I’m spending quality time with my family I don’t answer the phone. This gives me the love and connection I need.

The other side of the coin of these life coach tips came up when I was working. I allowed my family to come in when I was trying to focus on work. Usually they came in with quick questions, but nonetheless those interruptions broke the flow of productive work. A one minute question took up to 5 minutes to get back into the groove. What’s a coach supposed to do? I was working longer hours than ever, in an attempt to maintain the love and connection within my family.

The Key To Success Is Guard Your Time As If It Were Fort Knox

Here are some life coach tips to help guard your time:

1.Schedule your most important tasks when no one else is around or awake.
2.Get buy in from those who live or work around you, and set up boundaries around certain blocks of time.
3. Reward yourself and others around you for following through.

The key to securing your future is to be wary of people who will try to steal you away from your goals. Although it is usually completely innocent and unintentional, it is still the biggest threat to your success. Make sure you are prepared.

Life Coach Tips To Start Strong In Every Session

When you’re new to coaching, a few key life coach tips can feel like having a life vest on when you are about to go overboard in a stormy sea. If you’re a newbie, and even if you’re a more experienced coach, it may be a huge challenge to pick up the phone knowing you are the one running the coaching session with an actual client on the other end of the line. The best ways to get past this and start strong on all your sessions are life coach tips that I was lucky enough to get early on in my training, and I want to pass them along to you.

Starting Strong Is An Inner Game

.
One of the best of the life coach tips I was given for getting past the challenge of initiating and running a session is to prepare for coaching by getting “into state” with a ritual of some kind. You can use visualizations of particularly successful coaching experiences, real or imagined, or other times when you felt powerful, strong, successful, etc. You can ask yourself a set of questions that remind you what you are grateful about, what you are excited about, what you love, or whatever will give you positive feelings. You can use a power move—a move or gesture you make when you feel your most strong, your most sure, your most powerful, to anchor in those feelings.

Develop your ritual using whatever practice works for you to get in a peak state for coaching. Do it every time you will be coaching. Make it a habit and it’s effects will get stronger and stronger the more you use it.

Life Coach Tips To Foil The Fear

.
There are two critical life coach tips to foil the fear that can keep you from starting every coaching session feeling confident in your role of coach.

1. Remind yourself, perhaps as part of your getting into state, that the sessions you are about to coach are not about you. As part of my coaching ritual I always include these words: “This session is for my client. My stuff stays completely out of it.” Use my words or put the thought in your own words, but one of the best life coach tips is to say it out loud. You will find that those two sentences entirely change how you feel about what you are about to do.

2. Be totally committed to getting a result for your client in the session. This is a second way to give your subconscious mind the message that it doesn’t need to worry about you. It doesn’t have to protect you, so it can focus on your client instead.

Life Coach Tips For When You Don’t Know What To Do

I keep a little list of life coach tips posted on the wall in my office. It’s been up there since I started coaching although I don’t use it much anymore. But it helped me out a lot in the past when I got in a panic on a call because I didn’t know what to do next. Do you ever find yourself in that situation?Maybe my list of life coach tips will help you out sometime.

How Often Do You Ask Yourself These Questions?

.
One particularly scary situation for a new coach happens in your head as least as often as it happens in reality, and that’s the “What on earth do I say now?” scenario. It dovetails very nicely with the “What if I’m not good enough?” concern so prevalent among new coaches in particular. If you find yourself getting freaked out either by not knowing what to say or by the fear that you won’t know what to say, do you remember what you need to remember? That’s right–the most important and helpful of the life coach tips is that when you coach it’s about your client and not about you.

Post These Life Coach Tips On Your Wall

.
So what do you do when you don’t know what to do? Here are the life coach tips that helped me out over and over again:

  1. Ask yourself “What does my client need in this moment to move him toward his goal?
  2. Be committed to a result for your client. If you are truly committed you won’t let anything, including your fear, get in the way.
  3. Trust that you know what to do and what to say.
  4. Go with your intuition or your gut, however it comes to you. If you’ve been paying attention to what your client has been saying, the right words will come through you.
  5. Don’t think so hard. Just be in the flow.
  6. If you don’t know what to do, just try something
  7. If it doesn’t work, try something else
  8. If you get it wrong, your client will let you know and you can change course.
  9. The answers come from my client, not from me.

What do you do when you don’t know what to do? I’d love to hear.

Life Coach Tips For Influencing The Dominant Client

In order to influence your client you need to lead, and there are specific life coach tips to be able to do it effectively.  Especially when your life coach client is a driven, high achiever, who is used to leading.  You can’t go head to head in battle with these clients, because someone is going to get injured.  Even if you win in the moment your coaching relationship will suffer.  Here are some tips to help you navigate what can often appear to be dangerous territory.

Life Coach Tips To Lead the Leader

.
1.   Getting your clients into action.  The leader is usually very competitive in nature.  If you tell these clients what to do, they’ll fight you.  If they feel at all pushed, they’ll probably push back.  If they can’t effectively push you back, they will often quit coaching just so they can win.  So instead of telling them what to do, you can ask them questions.  For example, “What is one action that you could do that would get you closer to this goal than any other action.”  This puts them in the driver seat.

2.   Challenge your clients to get greater results.  One of the most effective and fun life coach tips for your high achievers is to give them a challenge.  A little playful banter can be very effective in getting your clients to stretch themselves without feeling nagged.

3.  Hold them accountable even when they get angry with you.  If you’re too afraid to call your clients on failing to achieve what they said they would, you’re making it about yourself.  If you are not coming from a place of total love and commitment to your client, you’ll do what everyone else in their life does which is to back down.

Check Your Baggage At The Door

.
In summary, these life coach tips are about deciding who you are going to be for your clients.  Any emotions need to be checked before you get on the call.  If you get pulled in emotionally, via fear or anger, you can’t be 100% there for your clients.

Life Coach Tips That Will Calm Even An Agitated 2 Year Old

how life coach tips can calm down even an agitated toddlerHave you ever met with someone who is downright rude and even though you looked through your life coach tips you couldn’t seem to talk your way out to safety? How much more freedom would you have in your life if you had tips that could get you through the toughest situations? What would it be like if even your family members saw you as a resource and coach?

3 Life Coach Tips That Will Get You From Troubled to Triumphant

.

1. One of the least used life coach tips is to just come clean. We all have agendas. We try to look good, get our own way or otherwise influence people to come into our world and see it as it “really” is. The worst part is that everyone but you can see that. When you are honest, you create the basis for an authentic conversation. The other day my 2 year old son asked if I was angry when he soiled his underwear. I had to assess my feelings, and realized I was annoyed. Not that I was proud of it, but the moment I realized the state I was in I was able to transform it.

2. Understand where the other person is coming from. My 2 year old was throwing his toys around and said he was frustrated. It was obvious he wanted attention, so I asked him to help make bread with me. If you understand where others are coming from, and can offer them a solution to their fears, frustrations or desires; you open up the channels to communication.

3. Give to others from a position of contribution. Just as you open a door for a stranger who you most likely will never to see again, when you give to others without wanting anything in return you can let go of your own expectations. It’s often easier done with strangers, but it is even more effective with people you are closest to.

The Power of Loving Gestures

.

The effect of these life coach tips is that you will transform yourself, and the people around you, through your contributions. We do this instinctively with small children who are well known for their brief periods of unruliness, and would even consider failing to do so unforgivable. When you recognize this behavior in others for what it is, a temporary lapse into childish behaviors, you regain the ability to use these life coach tips powerfully to make a change for the better.

Life Coach Tips To Avoid “Shiny Object Syndrome”

If anyone ever needed life coach tips, it’s now. With all the information and opportunity out there right now, it’s almost impossible to focus on one thing. The worst part of this syndrome is that high achievers are at the greatest risk. Since the key to success is based on the ability to focus, you’ll need a cure for Shiny Object Syndrome.

What is Shiny Object Syndrome?

.

Shiny Object Syndrome is the inability to focus on a single task or project in the midst of a sea of other enticing objects. Just like a fish is attracted to a shiny lure, we can be easily attracted to random objects. Some of these things appear to be great opportunities or big problems. In either case, these shiny objects take us off track.

Life Coach Tips To Maintain Focus In the Murky Sea Of Life

.

One of the most effective life coach tips is stay on track is accountability. Train your coaching clients to commit to actions that will take them closer to their goal, and let nothing come up to stop them. This prevents them from allowing the symptoms of Shiny Object Syndrome that include self talk such as, “I have a better opportunity”, “I didn’t have time because something else came up” or “I have so many great ideas I don’t know where to start.” If nothing else, these consistent steps toward their goals will eventually get them closer to the results they are looking for.

Another of the life coach tips that are effective in protecting your clients from Shiny Object Syndrome is to have them create a compelling vision. There is an old story about three works at a construction site, working at a pile of stones. An observer asked what they were doing. The first workers said he was breaking rocks. The second said he was making a living. The third replied that he was building a cathedral. Vision or sense of purpose is key to staying on course through the enticing obstacles that come up in our lives.

Hope you took some great value out of this post today! I’d love to hear your feedback, so make sure you leave a comment with your thoughts or questions. And also, you can click on the Twitter button below to retweet this article… Thank you!

Life Coach Tips: How Do You Use Serendipity?

Life Coach Tips How to use SerendipitySerendipity often plays a big role in how a life coach tips the scales toward success for a client. In a recent quote from A.Word.A.Day (http://wordsmith.org/awad), author Yahia Lababidi says “Like cars in amusement parks, our direction is often determined through collisions.” As coaches, our starting point is always to work with our clients to develop their sense of direction toward their goals. But everyone has collisions that knock them off the path they plan to pursue. Serendipity plays a big part in the direction we end up taking. So, how can you use serendipity to benefit your clients?

Keep an eye on the big picture

.

One way a life coach tips the scales in a client’s favor is to keep an eye on everything that is happening in your client’s life–the expected, the unexpected, and the interaction between them. You have a unique perspective into how the client is, or isn’t, producing the results he wants. Most people have blind spots that limit their ability to understand or even to see the multi-dimensionality of how results are produced, particularly if there is no direct cause and effect. Coach your client to become aware of his expectations and his feelings at multiple levels. Then, when serendipity challenges his plans, help him find the positive outcomes of those unavoidable and unexpected collisions we all experience on a day to day basis.

A life coach tips the scales towards opportunity

.

Collision, serendipity, accidents–whatever word you use, it’s also the word for opportunity. Something unexpected happens and suddenly there is an opening for new ways of thinking, new ways of taking action, and new kinds of results. But often, a client will be so focused on what he thinks he needs to do, or so committed to whatever ideas he has, he won’t see the opportunity that serendipity has put right in front of him. When opportunity knocks, a life coach tips the client toward the new path and helps him see both the opportunities he will miss out on if he clings to the familiar and the opportunities he has if he opens the door.

Life Coaching Tips: Re-Establishing Rapport When You Screw it Up

life coaching tips to help you get clientsLife coaching tips are not effective if they are not heard by your coaching clients. You will fail to make a difference in the life of your client by minding your manners. The best tips will fall to the ground. Why?  Freud himself said that you need to use intensity to be effective. Your coaching clients don’t need another conversation; they need life change and transformation. But how do you regain rapport if you go too far?

Life Coaching Tips: Being Proper and Professional Will Not Get You Clients

1

This is one of the most dangerous coaching myths. Unless you happen to have some clients who are extremely lonely and just need a friend, your clients pay you to get results. Getting results for your clients is the only way to get more clients. If you get results for your clients, even if they don’t “like” what you say, they will respect if not love you for it. I used to abruptly but politely hang up on my own mentor when I didn’t like what she said to me. We laugh about it now, because I got results and she never took it personally.

What If You Go Too Far and Your Client Gets Mad?

1

The best life coaching tips are to realize that when people get angry, they usually are responding to a loss of a need for significance. You can always “backpedal” and give your client some significance if you need to. Saying something like, “I know that’s not you. It’s just how you’re showing up right now,” has gotten me out of trouble a few times. Coming from a position of absolute love, caring and respect for your client will help you regain rapport quickly. If you really don’t respect your client it will be tough to make a come back.

Recently I was at an event where several of clients publicly acknowledged me for the audacity I had to say some things that sounded quite terrible out of context. It was quite obvious it was those key phrases that had made a lasting impact on their lives. By risking it all, everyone won.
