Coaching Skills: The Universal Power For All Leaders

The universal power of coaching skills begs the obvious question why don’t more CEOS, managers, professionals, and business owners get certified in potent coaching technologies so they become dynamic leaders instead of weak kneed, wet noodles who mostly ruin people lives’ when they try to lead their apprentices careers, but these unrefined leaders often fail their underlings miserably.

It can be a win-win proposition for leaders in all walks of life who make the smart decision to learn coaching technologies because the process of becoming a coach trains CEOs, managers, and business owners to become influential leaders. You can’t be seen as a serious coach. Unless you do something about your own shortcomings such as being coachable, accountable, confident, truthful, and have an indestructible belief in other’s ability to excel beyond their current circumstances.

This is the priceless win for you in becoming a coach and to make it a valuable win-win outcome for you and your coaching clients, you’ll be in the enviable position to offer them the coaching, leadership, and sympathy they need from you that’ll help them breakthrough their own shortcomings.

What’s required to learn coaching skills fast?

If you’re are serious about making a difference in other’s lives where you control their futures, you can read coaching books and practice on your own to acquire the skills or you can start quickly by joining a coaching certification program where you’ll be immersed in applying what you learn about coaching technologies right away.

The key thing to be aware of is you need to practice on someone, and you may not want to use your direct reports as Ginny pigs. In a coaching certification program, you’ll have peer coaching clients you’ll coach on a weekly basis. From this immersion experience, you’ll practice the universal power of coaching on other peer coaches from around the world while dramatically improving your coaching skills.

The value of this immersion experience can’t be matched by simply reading books on coaching technologies because after each coaching session with your peers in the coaching certification program, you’ll give and receive immediate feedback on each other’s coaching effectiveness.

Implementing coaching into your business, practice, or team

As long as you have permission to coach someone, you’ll have the skills to immediately impact their performance in powerful ways and get them past obstacles that prevent them from getting the results they desire.

You’ll have the awareness after becoming a coach to know when you should lead verses coach someone. This means that by learning coaching skills you’ll be in control of your urges to push beyond where a person is capable of going given their current mindset, and you’ll have the skills to help them obliterate their preventing mindset and take on an empowering alternative state of mind that can propel them forward towards their goal.

The people you lead will be happier and more productive, and you and they will be able to race forward in unbelievable ways towards creating your vision, mission, and goals faster than you could ever imagine.

Becoming a Life Coach: The Facts

I get asked a lot of questions about becoming a Life Coach and I welcome them because there are many misconceptions about the profession and what it’s about. Let me start by saying what it’s not. Life Coaching is not therapy, it is not counseling and it is not consulting although many physiologists, consultants and counselors are becoming trained and using coaching skills and technologies as a compliment to their practice.

Here are some things to consider when becoming a Life Coach.

  • What kind of life coach training do I need?

You need to be trained through a qualified organization. There are the major players that are credentialed by the ICF (International Coaches Federation)  or CTI but there are also many companies such as JTS Advisors who offer excellent training in strategy, accountability and assessment coaching.  Becoming a life coach is a true transition and there are serious skills sets to learn, so don’t skimp on getting the training and real coaching experience you need.  Why is training and coaching experience important?  Because you usually lack coaching skills when you are first considering becoming a coach, even if you think you’re a natural… professional coaches use their coaching skills every day and they’ve been honed after thousands of hours in varying situations.  You’ve got some work to do!

  • Do I need to be certified to become a life coach?

Ultimately the answer is no but it is absolutely recommended. Life coaching is a relatively new industry and credibility is often questioned. Certification adds credibility and believability.  Also, getting coaching certification will no doubt help improve your coaching skills even if only from having the logical and theoretical grounding to perform the basics.

  • So what is Life Coaching about anyway?

Life coaching or any kind of coaching for that manner is about bridging the gap and sustainable change. What that means is that often people want something different but are stuck in patterns or behaviors that are preventing them from getting to the next level. A great coach can get them unstuck like nothing I’ve ever seen

  • Are there any age barriers to becoming a Life Coach?

In short – No. As an adult any age is appropriate. I’ve known coaches as young as 22 and others well over 60. Each one brings something unique particularly when they settle on their particular niche.  Even if you are lacking the coaching skills at first, learning a few coaching frameworks (step by step instructions for coaching processes), you’ll have something to do with your clients that will help to a certain extent.

  • How much money can I make as a Life Coach?

This is a very broad question and is tied directly to your business model, your marketing, and the level of your coaching skills. There are coaches who are six figure coaches and there are those who barely scrape by. I encourage anyone entering the field to get assistance in these two areas. JTS offers excellent mentoring and training in these areas. Their partnership with Eric Lofholm (sales and marketing specialist), and other notable business partners provides an excellent framework  Remember that even having the best coaching skills in no way assures success as a life coach!  You’ve got to get your butt out the door and talk to people every day to gather enough relationships to support a thriving coaching practice.

  • How do I get clients when becoming a Life Coach?

You have more potential clients than you know starting with your friends, family and business associates. Don’t be afraid to approach them and offer them a free session. I used this when I first started with success. People felt great because of the experience they could see that the change they wanted was not only possible but doable. Develop a referral strategy through your client base and seek help with our sales and marketing strategy if you are uncertain what to do next

Hopefully I’ve provided some answers to your questions on becoming a Life Coach. If you have more, let us know by adding a comment on this blog. We’ll do our best to give you the answers you need.

Coaching From Peru for 30 Days

Here’s a short video diary of my time last year in Peru, where I vacationed in the Amazon, but also where I ran my coaching business and continued to make money from the Peruvian Andes.

This video shows my new coaching ‘office’ for the next 30 days, and the most important ingredients in an internationally mobile coaching business… wireless internet and a parrot named “Pedro”.

—————————

These next five videos depict my venture into the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.

The areas we spent most of our time in were the Peruvian Andes (highlands), the cloud forest (high altitude rainforest), and the Manu River Wildlife Reserve (lowland amazon rainforest).

Just watch the videos top to bottom to see the entire journey from the Andes to the Amazon.

—————————-

Here’s a video of Plaza de Armas in Cusco, Peru (Cusco is the capitol of the ancient Inca empire, but when the Spanish invaded, they built their modern plazas right on top of the Inca ruins)

———————–

Here is a video of a short drive through the busy and sometimes dangerous central plaza of Cusco, Peru.

Here is a set of COMPLETE videos from my little cooking saga…

I cover selecting good corn in its’ native land of origin, and all the other challenges that come up for a master coach trying to help cook a traditional Peruvian dinner.

Free Coach Training while on a ski vacation with my daughter

I just got back from a free coach training seminar, although it was really billed as a ski trip with my daughter. She just turned 7, and although we went on a few trips when she was 4 and again 5…she is now she is a head taller. She has longer arms and legs, and a 20% increase in height and weight. Technically speaking, she is working with a new set of tools.

So how is skiing like a free coach training? Because it reminds me that we are coaches 24/7. And going on this ski trip paralleled what often happens with a new client. There is the initial prep before the first session. Bags to be packed, equipment to be rented, with forms and waivers. Next you get to the first session, where goals are discussed. “Mommy, why is Anita going to ski in a different place?” Turns into a discussion of the over-crowded bunny slopes and long lift lines…resulting in the goal. “I want to ski at the top of the mountain, too.” If you want to go somewhere you’ve never been, you have to be someone you’ve never been.

We work on some strategies for getting up after falling, slowing down when you’re going too fast, and turning. At last we agree she’s ready to try to the beginner slopes at the top of the mountain. To get to the lift, we must traverse the mountain. More strategy, a lot of frustration and some fear of failing, not to be taken personally…this is about her and her goals. I remind myself it’s not about me when she’s yelling at me in frustration because she is down on the ground again. I get into her world, and I pull her with my pole (she doesn’t ski with them yet) where the ground is level. Then I lead her into the snack shack for a cup of hot cocoa and a little rest. She’s feeling refreshed and ready to take the next step.

Sometimes on the way to a goal, it seems like there is little progress. Like waiting in a lift line. Other times, we are on the way…but the process is so slow that we start thinking and getting nervous about what’s coming next. We’ll refer to that as the chair lift portion. I try to get my daughter into a state where she feels confident, and point out the beauty of mountains, remind her of why her goals are important to her. She is really into it. We get off the lift and start heading down.

The initial descent is a little steep. I lead the way. There is a lot of falling, and trying to get up. I am there for support and strategy, but she is the one who has to do it. She yells at me to get out of the way…feedback that she’s ready to do it on her own. She wipes out, feet up the hill. I trudge sideways up the hill to offer support, and a little nudge up. We make it down the initial descent and the slope levels just a bit. Enough though. She picks up speed, and starts flying down the mountain. The shift has occurred. Her voice confirms her feeling of empowerment. Weeee! Nice session. And so for the cost of some lift tickets and gear rental, I got some free coach training.

Sales Training Coaching – How to Help People Recession-Proof Their Business

Sales training coaching can help people double their income, even during tough times. Simply put, here are some of the questions that we can help answer:

WHY: As coaches we are used to helping people set powerful goals. But what if we get people to change their goal into a problem to solve? The brain is designed to answer questions, and solve problems. Also make sure your client has a powerful WHY, and is very clear on it. They need something to drive them to their goal. Something big and meaningful enough to help them over obstacles and through any challenges that will come up along the way.

WHAT: Help your clients develop a strategy and skill set that is clear. Salespeople that get into sales training coaching have a salesperson mindset.  They know and use certain strategies like cold-calling, asking for referrals, networking, etc.  If they want to increase their business, they can’t just rest on those basic strategies.  They need to expand their strategic horizons and use marketing strategies, because in order for them to reach goals they have never achieved before, they will need to create strategies they have never used before and master skills they have never mastered before. Sometimes it can be as easy as helping people develop time management skills. These include:

  • Setting goals and tracking results
  • Focusing on priorities
  • Organizing – which is both psychological and mechanical

WHERE and WHEN: Have a plan. Write it down. This also needs to be crystal clear. Help your clients find which activities can be eliminated. Get rid of anything that’s wasting time or money and not producing results. Help them find and reduce things that are being overdone. This will open up resources to increase time, expense, and frequency where needed in order to get into momentum as a result of sales training coaching.

HOW: Success Rituals: Support your clients in developing rituals to stay on track, and getting into the frame of mind to be able to move ahead into new territory. Set up systems of accountability. We all have beliefs…some that get us the results we want and others that don’t. Help your clients become aware of limiting beliefs. Help them change their focus, self-talk, and visualize success.

These are just a few of the ways we can help people get results through sales training coaching. People are definitely going to be looking for results in 2009, so use these coaching techniques liberally.

Become a Life Coach… Or a Better Coach

How can you become a life coach…or a better coach? One thing you will have to do is to get out of your own comfort zone.

Think contrast.

If you listen to rock, go to watch an opera. If you love steak and potatoes, go to eat at a restaurant that serves raw vegan food. Does that sound too wild and crazy? Why not study a foreign language, then travel to a country that speaks that language and get to know the locals.

Get out there and do something you’ve never done before, without judgment.

Because let me tell you, if you are comfortable…you are not growing. How are you going to become a life coach…a good one…unless you learn to start flying by the seat of your pants for awhile?

Don’t laugh.

If you are old enough to remember what a record is, then get out of that little groove you have been stuck in and start listening to something else. Sure you will scratch the record, but otherwise you will just hear the same music. It’s easy to stay in the same pattern, year after year. It takes effort to change and grow. And even success can be dangerous, because if you hang on to what worked in the past…failure is in the future.  Don’t become a life coach if you expect to be able to just sit on your haunches.

Leaders are leaders because they are AHEAD of the pack.  They got there by MOVING, and moving faster and move agilely than the rest.

The real intention is to stir up passions, dreams and creativity that is stuck down in the depths of a mediocre lifestyle, so you can start living your dreams. How many remarkable people do you know? Hang out with some kids, watch them play. They are remarkable. They pick up a discarded paper towel roll and find a use for it. An empty dental floss container becomes a treasured pager. They can sing off key and dance to their own beat, but they are not limiting themselves. They are not afraid to try.

Get some silliness back inside of you and stop trying to be perfect.

And as coaches, how are we going to support, encourage, people to live the lives of their dreams, if we do not lead? To lead, we must go first. It’s often said that if we live our lives to our potential, we will give others permission to do the same. And isn’t that what we really set out to do when we decided to become a life coach?

5 Fool-Proof Coaching Techniques for a Recession

.

What type of coaching techniques can we offer during this recession? Recession? Yes, and it’s overdue. People have been spending too much and saving too little, for too long. As a nation we are up to our chins in debt. We are going to have to learn how to prioritize spending. And this is a great opportunity for coaches to provide value and step up as leaders.

Fear and Anxiety are powerful, yet very different emotions. Fear is good for you. Fear saves lives. Fear gets you to run away from a charging bull down a narrow street in Pamplona. Anxiety keeps people awake at night, causes health problems, and keeps organizations from taking action until it is too late.

Who is better at helping people move past anxiety during a recession?

A doctor who can give you medication, so you won’t feel it…

Psychologists who will help you discover why you have anxiety…

Or a coach, who will help you move through the fear so you don’t get mauled by a bear market!

Market share. Look I’m not the only one who thinks 2009 may be a tough year economically. People are going to spend less money, and shop for deals. But wherever some people are loosing money others are making money. More people became millionaires during the Great Depression than in any other era in U.S. history. What coaching techniques do you already have that can not only help people capture existing market share, but create new markets?

Attitude. We can help people see that they can position themselves to be a powerless victim or a winner. Assessment tools can be very valuable in helping people find out where they are. So much opportunity can be lost with a poor attitude. Can coaches help? Of course! We are the experts. Powerful coaching techniques can include getting to the point where we truly understand the client, and then BEcome the client…then by using outside perspective we can help cause transformation or shifts in attitude.

Goal setting. Helping out clients set goals that are in-line with their values will help them stay motivated and on course. Simple, but not always done.

Efficiency. Often people are busy running around a tree, and at the end of the day be no further toward their goal. Just tired, worn out and frustrated. Now is the time to help people trim off the unproductive “fat” and take a “leaner” approach to getting into action. Helping clients develop a strategy and plan, then provide accountability coaching and help them take action on the most powerful steps toward their goal.

Who do you need to BE this year, to really make a powerful difference in people’s lives during this recession? What coaching techniques to you need to develop or to refine to be a leader? Take this opportunity to make 2009 a very happy new year!

What are your best anti-recession coaching techniques? Share them with us in your comments below!

Wellness and Extreme Care Coach Training

Wellness and extreme care coach training can be an important part of what you learn as you become a life coach. Why? Because when you coach a lot of people you are going to run into wellness issues. I’ve coached thousands of people, so I think at this point I’ve almost ‘seen it all’ when it comes to challenges of the human condition, but even after coaching 20 or 30 I had run into ‘wellness’ issues.

What is a ‘wellness issue’? It is some problem having to do with the health of your client. This issue can be a disease or sickness they are dealing with, like I’ve had a client with Crone’s disease, and Lupus, and cancer, etc. This issue can also be a psychological problem that effects wellness. I’ve worked with clients that got anxiety attacks, or bulimia/anorexia, or trouble sleeping, etc. Wellness issues can also be self-induced, but not directly connected with an obvious psychological problem, but have nasty physical side-effects, such as alcohol or drug use. I’ve worked with both alcoholics and people that abuse marijuana daily. You’d be surprised at how common many of these ‘wellness issues are’ and how many clients you will have that are dealing with one or many of them. That’s why wellness and extreme care coach training is so important.

Another aspect of what should be included when you receive your wellness and extreme care coach training is the legal aspect of it. When dealing with extreme care and wellness cases, you’ve got to know the law, and how it applies to you as a coach. I look at this as an issue of integrity as well as a self and client-protection issue as well. If someone is of danger to themselves or others, or they begin to profess suicide attempts etc., you need to contact the authorities and refer your client to a mental health professional or medial professionals. There are other important laws that apply to you and your role as a coach that you need to know, and you should be learning all these basic laws and ethical guidelines in your endeavour to receive wellness and extreme care coach training.

What will you do when you’re faced with a client or a coaching call that brings up a major emergency or a wellness / extreme care issue? Will you know what to do? Will you save the day and be the hero that creates a positive turning point in their life, or will you shrink from the challenge? The wellness and extreme care coach training that you get will most probably decide the outcome, and ultimately the answers and the fate of your client, is in your hands.

Career Coach Training…investment strategy for the current economy?

Could a career coach training be the best use of your investment money? Have you watched the stock market swing several hundred points up or down in a single day? Even the value investors have been blindsided. The equity in our homes is dropping, more and more companies are going out of business, and the commercial real estate industry is looking for bailout money. Not to mention the mess with the auto industry. It really makes me wonder, is there safe place to invest right now?

With unemployment rates continuing to rise, there is a great opportunity for coaches to make a difference. As a career coach, you can help people assess where they are, get the skills they need, and help them navigate through these uncertain times. A lot of people are living in fear and are looking for a leader. Are you that person who will help change their lives? Who do you need to become and what do you have to own about yourself to know you can do this at will? What could career coach training do for you? You are your greatest asset. If you can teach others how to be unstoppable when times are tough, imagine what they will be able to accomplish when the pendulum swings back to a more prosperous time?

Now is not the time to become a complacent bear, walking into a cave for winter’s hibernation. Did you accomplish the goals you set out to do last year? What about 5 years ago? Are you looking forward to the new year with anticipation and hope? Or fear and dread? It’s time to get a plan of action in place for the upcoming winter months, and a enrolling in career coach training can help you get you on the right path. Before you know it, it will be spring, and the season of opportunity. Get ready!
