When You Become a Certified Life Coach, are You Certified in The Steps to Becoming a Life Coach That is Successful?

Is the Top Life Coaching School in America Teaching the Steps to Becoming a Life Coach With “Client Getting” Power?

I just talked with a few principles from some of the top coaching schools in America, and I realized that although they may understand the steps to becoming a life coach, they seem to not care about teaching it to their students.  A certified life coach has some real challenges in front of them if they are to get coaching clients in this marketplace, and you aren’t going to learn how to get clients from most of the top coaching schools in America.

Why?

Because you aren’t DEMANDING that they teach you how to get clients.

Yes, I think it’s your responsibility to demand this type of training from these coaches training institutions and for you to let them know how ineffective their trainings are in teaching you the steps to becoming a life coach that can get paying coaching clients (even if they are effective in helping you become a certified life coach).

I Could Blame Them for Making You a Certified Life Coach Without Giving You The Skills to Survive

I could say that the top coaching schools in America are irresponsible in their endeavour to help coaches learn how to get clients, and perhaps I would be right in saying that.  But, I’m not the one to say who’s responsibility it is to teach new coaches the steps to becoming a life coach (although I would assume it SHOULD be these so-called “coach training institutes”).  Personally I feel a responsibility to help every coach that goes through my training learn the steps to becoming a life coach that can get clients any time they want.

Even though I’m not a certified life coach, I feel very confident that any time I want to get more coaching clients, I can just go out and promote a bit, call some past clients, and ‘voila’, I’ll have high paying clients.  You got to understand how great it feels to have the knowledge that you can subsidize your income and always just pull the trigger on a few things and then have more paying coaching clients.  The steps to becoming a life coach were challenging to figure out and learn because no one had combined all the most important information about becoming a certified life coach with paying clients in one area, along with a system for understanding how to use it.

How a Certified Life Coach, Ignorant of the Right Business Skills, Fails to Understand the Steps to Becoming a Life Coach with an Effortlessly Growing Practice

But most coaches haven’t the foggiest idea how to get paying coaching clients, or worse, they THINK they know how to get paying coaching clients… and they’re dead wrong.

I had a coach come up to me the other day, very excited to show me their new website.  It WAS a good looking website.  They told me how they were going to make SO MUCH MONEY and get SO MANY CLIENTS with their shiny new website.  I didn’t have the heart to tell them that their website wasn’t going to make them a dime because of they way it was constructed.  This coach was a certified life coach and they simply didn’t know the steps to become a life coach who could effortlessly build their practice.  They probably shelled out at least $500 and time / money they didn’t have in order to get that website up.  the funny thing is that this kind of ‘coaching tragedy’ is happening every day.

With the Accredited Coaching Schools out There, I Doubt You’ll Be Well Enough Equipped

It’s a jungle out there when it comes to coaching schools and what they are teaching you.  The steps to becoming a life coach can be long and quite hard without the proper life coach education.  A certified life coach needs to be careful of the ICF (International Coaches Federation) and their ‘accredited coaching school’ referral service, because it conveys a false sense of security based upon the dream of having lots of coaching clients because you learned some magic coaching trick (there are magic coaching tricks, but they don’t guarantee paying clients).

Options for Life Coaching Education from Becoming a Certified Life Coach to Earning a Life Coaching Degree

Life Coaching Degree

Various colleges are now providing a life coaching degree.  Here are a few of them:
.
  • Howard Community College offers a Professional Coaching program.  This isn’t a life coaching degree in and of itself, but it’s a ‘college’ course, which helps with some of the credibility.
  • The University of Texas at Dallas offers an Executive and Professional Coaching Program
.

Becoming a Certified Life Coach:

Many organizations offer a chance to become a certified life coach.  A few options:
ICF offers many coaching schools that offer certifications and chances to become a certified life coach.
JTS Advisors offers several different opportunities to become a certified life coach in disciplines such as Accountability Coaching, Strategy Coaching, Assessment Coaching, and Master Coach counseling strategies as well.
.

Other Certifications (Other Than a Certified Life Coach Track):

You may need to look for certifications outside of the coaching world, because those certifications may offer more important skills than even the coaching certifications or life coaching degrees do (for your particular focus).
.

Life Coaching Training

Many trainings that don’t offer a chance to become a certified life coach are very valuable and shouldn’t be passed up just
because of their non-certification status.  Just as there are very few life coaching degrees, there are very few coaching schools that give you the certifications that are widely accepted.  Some of the best training can be gotten from schools that don’t offer certification.
.

Just Do It (No Training)

You always have the option to just go out and start coaching and see what happens.  these opportunities for life coaching degrees and to become a certified life coach will always be there waiting for you to be ready for them.  As they say, when the student is ready the teacher appears!

What Education is Required to Become a Coach? Life Coaching Education from Life Coaching Degree to Becoming a Certified Life Coach

Life coaching education is a wide subject, and it’s very important to life coaches to learn what they need to know to become a life coach.  Where do you start?  Do you go to college and get a life coaching degree, or do you simply take a coaching course and become a certified life coach?  Whichever way you go, you must consider 3 things.
.

The 3 Things to Consider in Your Journey to Becoming a Certified Life Coach (at Least in Spirit)

1.  Your Goal:
.
Do you want to moonlight as a coach or do you want to become the ultimate coaching guru with a large coaching empire?  Do you want to make coaching a part of your consulting or psychotherapy practice or do you want to hire coaches to work for you as you go out and give large seminars?  If so, you may not need to become a certified life coach.
.
If you are simply adding coaching to a current professional services business, then you probably don’t need to have a life coaching degree, but if you are looking to build a coaching empire, then you’ll probably (eventually) want to become a certified life coach.  You may not know exactly what your coaching goal is, and in that case your life coaching education is going to be in question as well.  My suggestion… wait to figure out your goal or coaching vision before you go out and get a life coaching degree or look at a certified life coach future.
.
2.  The Skills You’ll Need to Reach That Goal:
.

You want to become a certified life coach

.
Why?  Do you want the ‘street cred’?
.
Perhaps you really need certain skills.  See, your clients just want to hire you as a professional coach because you have the coaching skills they need in order to produce the results they want in their life or business.  they really don’t care whether or not you have a life coaching degree or if you have not even become a certified life coach (except in so far as they believe it will impact the kind of results they get from coaching with you).
.
So much more important than that life coaching degree is knowing the set of skills you need to garner in order to produce that result of having the big shiny coaching empire or just adding a few coaching clients to your professional services practice.
.
3.  The Skills That You’ll Have to Learn in The Field
.
Certain life coaching skills simply can’t be taught (for the most part) in the process of getting a life coaching degree or becoming a certified life coach.  You’ve got to just go out and work!
.
For instance, it’s easy to coach someone in a safe coaching school environment, because it’s all just practice.  But what if that same person was paying you $1,000 per month to coach them, and they just threatened to quit?  Now how much good is that life coaching degree going to do you?  Probably not much… You’re going to have to use true EXPERIENCE and produce results out of your own willpower and composure, and being a certified life coach may not make any difference.  That’s where your life coaching education will not help you.  You are on your own!

Remember, beyond being a certified life coach and getting some ‘fancy pants’ life coaching degree, your PHD needs to be in results, and only YOU can decide if your journey will be successful.
