Coach Training Tips: Life Coaching Training to Discover What Your Clients Really Want

Sometimes even with advanced coach training it’s hard to know what your clients really want.  That’s because it’s not always clear to your client.  This life coaching training is based on the foundation that what your clients really want is to satisfy one of their basic needs at a higher level.  In this coach training we’ll work under the assumption that the basic needs are certainty, significance, variety and love & connection.  But this life coaching training can be applied to other needs as well.

Coach Training: Listen to Your Client to Discover What They Need

Life Coaching Training Step #1:  Ask your clients what they want, but listen for what they “need”.  The key to this coach training step is to listen for the top 1-2 needs they are trying to meet by getting what they think they want.

Coach Training: After Listening, Explain the Four Emotional Needs

Life Coaching Training Step #2:  Explain the four emotional needs.  Certainty is about safety, security and comfort.  Variety is the opposite of certainty.  Significance is about being unique, special, one of a kind, needed.  Love and connection is about being part of something bigger than you, and in many ways it’s a polar opposite to being significant.  The key to this coach training step is to have your clients understand that their needs drive their actions.

Coach Training: Have Your Client Rate Themselves on These Needs

Life Coaching Training Step #3:  Have your clients rate themselves on a scale of 0-10 on each of these needs.  The key to this coach training step is to find out where they are getting their needs met and where they are not.  Their wound is the need they are not getting met at a high level now.  Mind read, that is tell them what you think their wound is, and listen to their feedback.

Following these life coaching training steps will help you and your client identify what they really want to achieve.  Your clients will most likely still have the same vehicles to achieve their needs in terms of goals, but by using this coach training you will help establish motivation that is strong enough to carry them through the obstacles that will inevitably come up.

Life Coaching Training Essentials to Enroll Clients: Coach Training You Can Apply Today

Even after life coaching training courses, many new coaches are unclear about exactly how to get clients.  Sure, most coach training courses suggest that you run free sessions but a lot of time it’s not effective.  Why?  In order for a free coaching session to be compelling enough to enroll a client, that client must see you as the only way to achieve what is most important in his life.  Most coach training courses do not make this distinction.  Here are some of life coaching training essentials that will change the way you run free sessions forever.

Life Coaching Training 101: Establish Rapport

The first of these life coaching training essentials is that you must establish rapport.  A lot of coaches think that having a friendly conversation is enough to establish rapport.  It’s not.  You must get them to know, like and trust you.  The coach training technique that I’ve found most powerful is to use a three-part compliment.  Compliment them sincerely, tell them why you feel that way, and then ask a question to get more clarity on what allowed them to believe or accomplish whatever you complimented them on.

Life Coaching Training 101: Use Your Coaching Skills Effectively to Make a Difference

The next of these life coaching training essentials is to make sure you are discussing an ambitious goal.  One of my clients told me his goal was to complete a century bicycle ride in a month’s time.  At the age of 70, I thought this might be an ambitious goal so asked him a few more questions.  I found out that he had done this event nine times in the past.  This goal was going to be achieved whether we had this session or not.  Don’t let your coach training go to waste.  Make sure you are making the best use of your time and your clients by having them tell you what makes their goals ambitious, and raise the stakes if you need to.

Life Coaching Training 101: Emotionally Engage Your Prospective Clients

The most important life coaching training lesson is to get your clients emotionally engaged.  Just like no one buys a car for a rational reason, you must get your clients emotionally connected to their goal.  It has to go from a good idea to a desire so great that they would do anything to attain it.  One coach training tip is to get them to see the pain they would experience by not achieving their goal and the intense pleasure they would experience if they achieved that goal.  Then ask then what it would be worth to be able to make that choice.  It has to be priceless, or they are not emotionally committed to that goal.  Keep working with them until they get to that point.

How long does it take to run a free session using these life coaching training essentials?  The answer is until you complete it.  I have spent up to three hours with a client during a free session, because that is what he needed.  I have also enrolled people in under an hour; the average is an hour and a half.  The best coach training lesson is to give your clients what they need to move forward, and don’t count the minutes.  If you think you’re going to run out of time, schedule a follow up.  Some people may get so much out of the free session that they will feel they don’t need coaching.  These people are a great source of referrals.  The others will enroll into coaching if at all possible.  In any case, at least you played full out and make a difference in someone’s life.

I don’t think Karen Pryor had life coaching training in mind when she wrote, “Don’t Shoot the Dog!  The New Art of Teaching and Training.”  But it’s a good coach training resource to help answer the problem: how do you get your clients to perform.    One of the key coach training distinctions of this book is that all our actions reinforce behavior.   This life coaching training is about knowing how to reinforce the behaviors you want to get the results you want.

Life Coaching Training 101: How do Reinforcements Work?

Life Coaching Training Principle #1:  Positive reinforcers are anything paired with a behavior that increases the likelihood of that behavior occurring again.    Used properly positive reinforcers are very effective.  These reinforcers should be delivered as the behaviors occur.  Imagine using delayed reinforcement on your pet.  Telling your dog, “good boy” a few days after he sits on command doesn’t work.  Telling a loved one how great she looked when you went to out for dinner last week has a similar effect.  I use this coach training principle with my clients.  I have them call me to let me know they have followed through with a commitment.  Immediately after they complete the task, if possible.  Even though they usually leave a voice message, the occasional time they reach me is like hitting the jackpot in Vegas.

Life Coaching Training Principle #2:  Negative reinforcement might be as subtle as a change in tonality or giving someone a sideways glare.  Having an accountability discussion with your client who shows up late or fails to complete his commitments is one situation where this coach training may apply.  Another is yelling “Stop” when your two year old has a fistful of his sister’s hair in his hand while they are sitting in the backseat of the car.  If the negative reinforcer continues after the result is achieved, it’s tuned out.

Life Coaching Training Principle #3:  Another way to positively reinforce your clients is to give them encouragement along the way toward their goals.  Think of rewarding yours clients for continuing their efforts knowing they will eventually get the “reward.”  A word of warning about this coach training.  Be careful not to reward your clients for “trying” because this sometimes just gets people to seek attention.

There are a couple of common examples that will come up once you start becoming a dating coach. For example, love and connection and significance are on opposite sides of the same axis. As people move toward love and connection, they move away from significance. The life coaching training to remember here is that people might initially be so caught up in love and connection that they find themselves feeling less significant. The feel they loose their need for an independent identity and get frustrated or even angry. Anger is a way of feeling significance.

Another pattern you might start to see in becoming a dating coach is a partner’s need for certainty can be manifested in a desire to control his or her environment. The other person will most likely experience that as manipulating, controlling, or bossy. It’s definitely not a great vehicle for love and connection. You might also look at this life coach training and see that some people need to feel significant before they feel love and connection. Some people actually forget that their relationship is really a better vehicle for love than significance.

The Four Steps to Becoming a Life Coach: Life Coaching Training to Guide You Down the Path of Becoming a Master Coach

Become a Master Coach by Utilizing These Steps to Becoming a Life Coach

 

There are several key steps to becoming a life coach who achieves mastery in coaching.  Life coaching training will make coaching as second nature as tying your shoes, eating, or performing other commonplace activities.  Human beings are learning machines, and the process of learning never stops.  Once you are aware of the steps to becoming a life coach who achieves mastery in coaching; the process becomes an enjoyable adventure rather than a frightening task.  One of they keys to life coaching training is to take advantage of and be prepared for new challenges and learning opportunities – if you are on the court, you should be learning.  

Step 1:  Vision – Unconscious Incompetence.  

The first of the steps to becoming a life coach is acknowledging that your coaching dream is possible.  This stage is described as unconscious incompetence, because you are unaware of your lack of ability and of the education that required to be a coach.  You have fun as you think about life coaching training and talk about it to your friends whenever possible.  You acknowledge your coaching dream is POSSIBLE and create a DESIRE in your heart.  Most coaches enjoy this stage; it is both fun and exciting.

Step 2:  Resolve – Conscious Incompetence.  

After you have created your coaching vision in the second of the steps to becoming a life coach you become conscious of your incompetence.  Many coaches never enter this stage because it is too difficult for them.  Some quickly drop out of life coaching training while others are overwhelmed with how much education is required to be a coach.  The only way to continue coaching is to have a high level of resolve toward your coaching dream.  This stage is not necessarily the longest, but may feel like it.  If you’ve made it this far you should reward yourself, the majority of new coaches leave the process before getting to this far.  Try to make it fun and know that every day you enter in resolve is a victory.

Step 3:  Pursuit – Conscious Competence:  

The next of the steps to becoming a life coach, is the pursuit stage.  By putting your life coaching training into action you begin to create some of the coaching results you desire, though each result takes painstaking thought and conscious discipline to achieve.  You have to plan and design every effort to go on as a coach.  In Stage 2 you are working hard, but not getting results.  At this stage you continue to put forth the same amount of effort but you begin to see some of the fruits of your labor.   For many this is the longest stage, lasting years.

Step 4:  Identity – Unconscious Mastery:  

In the last of the steps to becoming a life coach you no longer think in order to create your desired outcome.  You also are able to improve without effort.  You have mastery and are sought after by others to teach life coaching training courses.   You are a master coach. 

Preparedness is Key to Life Coaching Training

 

While of these steps to becoming a life coach is unique, it is consistently important for you to be prepared for whatever stage of life coaching training you are in.   Knowing that the challenges you face in the earlier stages are common to others may help you persevere until you reach the latter stages.  Once you reach the latter stages you will find motivation in the results you achieve.

  2. Conditioning – Your client will create a habit from anything they do for 30 days, such as affirmations, new activities, new emotions, etc..

  3. Leverage – Show your client what needs of theirs are not getting met, and cause them to feel that loss. Then project that loss into the future. Then help them to link pleasure to making the change.

  4. Create peer group support to reinforce their behaviors.  Your clients peer group has influence over whether the change will last.

  5. Find empowering alternatives – Alternatives, by this time, should become clear. Help your client by asking them questions and allowing them to discover these for themselves instead of having you tell them.

How do You Become a Life Coach Who Can Discover Someone Else’s “Needs Pattern”?

 

  1. Look at their vehicles (the things they regularly do, be, and have in life). Are they a stay at home mom or CEO?  Do they have a nice car, or a nice family?  Do they work out at the gym or do they smoke pot?

  2. Teach them the 4 basic needs (see above) and ask them how they think they are meeting their needs (and with what vehicles they are meeting their needs).  Ask them what needs they feel they are not meeting and why.

  3. Notice how they use their three forces (see above) and what emotions (their fuel(s) of choice) they are using. Fear may meet the need for certainty by ‘petrifying’ your client so they stay where they are.  Anger may meet the need for significance by making people sit up and pay attention to them.

Salary of a Life Coach:  How Much Can You Make?

The salary of a life coach is six figures for only 10 to 20 percent of coaches, according to Forbes.com. Since the median salary for life coaches in the United Sates is only $30,000 to $40,000 per year, it means that there are a lot of coaches who are making much less than $30,000.


Avoid The Salary of a Life Coach That Will Make You Sell Your Furniture to Pay Your Rent

What type of life coaching training will you need to get the salary of a life coach that allows you to live the life of your dreams?  Will you need life coaching training?

The Secret to Getting ‘Guru Level’ Salary of a Life Coach:

.

You are going to have to work harder than you think, for longer than you want, and learn how to go beyond where you are comfortable. And yes, you will need life coaching training.

I have often read that you don’t need specific life coaching training or a degree to become a life coach…That may be true, but you will need life coaching training and experience to become a life coach who makes a decent salary. According to pay scale.com, the median salary of a life coach who works for him or herself is greater than coaches who work as employees. But your chances of winning the lottery are better than landing a steady job with a company unless you have life coaching training and experience.

Options For Gaining a Salary as a Life Coach

No matter where you get your training, you are ultimately going to have to produce a salary somehow.  There are several options you can choose from and each one fits with only a few personalities.  Ultimately, you’ll probably find a good fit with one or two of these options, while the others will feel like a waste of your time, or worse… impossible.

OPTION #1:  Work For a Big Coaching Conglomerate

.

If you work with one of these big conglomerates, you’ll probably get some free training, and you’ll most likely be given coaching clients to work with and be paid to coach them. That means you’ll absolutely have a job and you won’t have to wonder where the next client is coming from. For some, this is a perfect place to start coaching because everything is laid out for you and you can go right to work as a coach.

However, you’ll likely be trained only in the information the organization wants you to parrot to their customers. These big conglomerates have a vested interest in only sharing THEIR information with their customers (because it helps them indoctrinate their customers deeper into working only with them), so you probably won’t have a lot of freedom about what you are going to coach about. In fact, many of these coaching organizations are simply call centers with a ‘boiler room’ full of ‘coaches’ that are given a script to read to their clients. It’s more like teaching a particular curriculum or re-selling a customer on what they already know.

The income potential for work with the big conglomerates is quite limited, because they aren’t looking for ‘genius level’ coaching. This is the ‘McDonalds’ version of coaching… They have set up an idiot-proof system that almost anyone that speaks English should be able to run, so they don’t expect to pay a lot of money for their planned ‘mediocre’ level of labor. You probably won’t make much more than $30,000 per year working at a big coaching conglomerate. Because it is an already grown and ‘mature’ organization, there won’t be a lot of opportunity for promotion and big raises in salary.  The good news, however, is that it’s pretty much guaranteed and consistent income.

OPTION #2:  Grow Your Own Coaching Practice Organically

This method can be a bit slow, especially if you don’t already have much of a personal network with money to spend (and a reason to spend it) on coaching.  However, if you want to run your own ship and you really care about people, this can be the most rewarding and growth oriented approaches to take.  You’ll need to generate your own coaching leads, and get them signed up for free sessions with you.  It’s a ‘one person at a time approach to getting coaching clients‘.  You can’t help but grow when the main way to bring income is to talk to new people every day and help them change their lives for the better.  WARNING: For most people, this is the most challenging approach.

Option #3:  Start a Training, Teaching, or Education Business

.

This method is available to savvy entrepreneurs that have some education in direct marketing or building a client base of hundreds or thousands in their life coaching business.  There are large income potentials here (in the millions), but remember that there are also potential failures that could cost you lots of money as well.  Don’t go into a large business approach to coaching unless you either have the experience, or are willing to learn the lessons of a large information marketing business first hand and go through the school of hard knocks.

One of the business oriented models that can work quite well in bringing in lots of life coaching income is to run groups.  Group coaching can multiply your income per hour quickly, but remember that you’ll need the life coaching skills to pull off a group that is happy with what they’re paying for, not to mention, you’ll still have to be a savvy enough marketer to bring in enough clients to fill up a few coaching groups.

The salary of a life coach is dependent on his or her skills, not only in coaching but in sales and marketing. If you are looking for an easy way to make $30,000 a year, I recommend finding a job. If you want to make $30,000 a month as a coach, you will need some really great life coaching training and mentoring if you don’t have the skills and experience already. You will also have to pull up your sleeves and work. It can be done, but ultimately it’s up to you.

Hard Work Brings in The Money

When I first started my life coaching career, I looked at this as a bad thing. But think about it… If you were coaching a high achiever to the next level, would you expect them to stretch? Of course. Do you think that you wouldn’t have to do the same for yourself? If you expect others to stretch, you’d be a hypocrite to not expect the same from yourself (not to mention an ineffective life coach).

Life Coach Salary Comes From Life Coaching Training

.

Don’t let yourself fall into a mediocre life.  Don’t let your clients be mediocre either.  Make the decision to be the coach that can create the life coaching business you know is possible.  Seek the greatness inside you and you will find it, and you’ll be able to cultivate it in others as well.

So, you have decided to become a professional life coach and have a little life coaching training under your belt. Despite your life coaching training, do you ever wonder if you really are providing value for your clients? Are you afraid that you don’t have all the answers? Do you worry that you might give someone bad advice? Are you ever afraid that you won’t be able to become professional life coach because you don’t really have anything to offer?

Sometimes we all need a little confidence boost. For many of us, lack of confidence is what keeps us from moving forward. Even when we have enough knowledge and life coaching training to become a professional life coach.

Many people have never had the experience of having someone really listening to them. To become a professional life coach, listen with the intent to really understand the other person. Make your intent is to understand your client so well that you can see the world through their eyes, not your own.

Just knowing that someone is going to be “watching them”, or making sure they are following through with their commitments, can be enough to get people to take action toward their goals. It’s just like scheduling to meet a friend at a gym. You are far more likely to go, because you don’t want to look bad.

Just talking to someone often helps people get clarity over issues. Some people just need to talk about what has been rattling around inside their heads all week. Getting ideas out in the open can provide value by helping them sort through their ideas and get focused.
