Bizarre Ways to Get Coaching Training

“Bizarre ways to get coaching training.” OK. I picked that title to get your attention. But I am so committed to it that I looked up the word “bizarre” and what do you suppose I found? The definition, of course… “strikingly out of the ordinary.” Hum. Here are three sensible, if perhaps strikingly out of the ordinary ways to become a trained coach. Learn by following these examples.

Who else Helps Their Client Play a Different Role?

How about a director? Are they involved in coaching training? Yes. A dear friend of my three daughters, literally a forth daughter, just graduated from Northwestern as a theatre major and she is a professional director. She is a great mix of tenderness and steel. She shows you what is called for and lovingly encourages you to play the role, but if necessary, she reminds you, in no uncertain terms, why we are all here. So perhaps a rich presentation of the desired role, followed by a sensitive invitation to step into that role, followed – if necessary – by an intense meeting of the minds to explain that it is simply time to step up, play the role, and move ahead is a required skill for a coach.

Who else Holds Their Clients Accountable as a Model for Coaching Training?

Who could be a better model for accountability coaching training than a real hard-ass boss? That’s right, a “show me your scales you heartless reptilian SOB” who takes “sorry I just couldn’t get it done” for what it is – a protest. A protest of a three year old crying, holding their breath and stamping their feet. And certainly not the behavior of a person aspiring to be a true adult, who has made a commitment, and who will do whatever it takes to meet that commitment. That is often exactly the job of an accountability coach.

Who else Lifts the Hearts of Their Clients and Makes Them Sing?

Contrast these images with that of a conductor, who demands at least as much but motivates by tapping into the inner drive that elevates our spirit and our very soul to heights beyond our own imagining, by showing what can be. Yes, when it comes to coaching training, learning to inspire is among the necessary skills for anyone who calls themselves a coach!

Three Musts For Effective Coaching Training

When evaluating coaching training for yourself, make sure you get plenty of these three ingredients: skills matched to real-world needs, scientifically grounded principles, and lots and lots of actual coaching. These could come entirely in a classroom setting, over the internet, or via conference calls. In fact, the best programs are a mix of all three. Just don’t expect to get what you need to be a great coach in three weeks or less, for the bargain price of $999.00. Expect to invest a year and a half to three years of intense study, and several thousands of dollars for the training needed to transform people’s lives.

Touchy-Feely Coaching Went-out with Hot Tub Therapy

Your coaching training must prepare you to change peoples’ lives – positively and consistently. Too many people are in real pain. And as a coach, you have a moral obligation to address their real needs with real solutions. Look for strong evidence and a proven track record of addressing real needs with real and long lasting solutions.

Look for Methods Based on Reputable Science

Whether neuro linguistic programming or hypnotherapy, insist on methods based on solid scientific research. Without this commitment to scientifically founded methods, you may be building your career and staking your clients’ futures on fads and popular myths. Frankly, your career may be your business. But your clients’ futures are not to be toyed with, and represent a sacred trust. So setting aside the passion of the moment, you must be able to separate fact from fashion in your coaching practice.

Coaching Training Must Include Tons of Coaching

Beyond practical training and scientific research, your coaching training must contain significant quantities of coaching, being coached and evaluating coaching. This implies that there are coaching processes adapted for each type of coaching, and a standard to judge good coaching from bad. If the program you are involved with does not have such differentiation, standards and criteria, stop and evaluate whether such a program can meet your needs.

If you don’t find solid coaching practices adopted to clients’ needs, methods based on solid science, and ample opportunities to coach, be coached and to judge coaching, then you simply are not in a serious program equipped to help you become the great coach that you have been called to become.

Three Must-Haves in Coaching Training

What To Look For In A Coaching Training Program | Image by INCThere are a LOT of coaching training programs out there. There are good programs, and I am sure that there are some really bad programs. Promises of “certification” or titles of “master coach” don’t guarantee anything in the real world. Before you sign up, check out the school and its faculty, ask for a free coaching session, demand to speak with staff and graduates, check out training materials. And whatever else you do look for these three must-haves.

Consider only Comprehensive, Scientifically Grounded Programs

Look for coaching training that offers accountability coaching (getting people to do what they know they should do, but they don’t want to do), strategy coaching (helping clients achieve their most ambitious goals by addressing fundamental needs, blockages and transformations) and assessment coaching (administering and interpreting scientifically validated psychological instruments to give profound insights). Also make sure the material taught is grounded on well established scientific principles, including NLP. Coaching without mastering this range of coaching methods is like trying to build a house a screwdriver, but not a hammer and saw.

Accept only Coaching Training Programs with a TON of Actual Coaching

Coaching is built on a foundation of scientific principles, but it is an art that must be learned through actual practice. Any program that you consider should include hours and hours of coaching sessions in which you are the coach AND in which you are coached. The experience of coaching in real sessions, combined with hours and hours of being coached result in the mastery of techniques and intense person growth.

Require Coaching Business Training

Unless you are learning coaching purely for amusement, you need to master the business of coaching. This includes business development through networking, public speaking and web-based marketing. It also means establishing business processes like client induction, contracts and how to structure service offering and fees. Without such comprehensive approach, your coaching training will cost you lot of money and a lot of time, but will leave you unprepared to properly serve your clients, and unprepared to be a success in the real world of coaching.

Special Bonus – Learn 3 simple ways to become a life coach with the “30-Days to Become a Coach” video toolkit when you fill in the form at the top right and click the “Watch The Videos Now” button. You’ll learn how to change your client’s life in 45 minutes.

Mentor Skills: The Added Value You Can Provide by Completing Coaching Training Courses

Coaching training can contribute to strong mentor skills. | Image by psychologytodayThe Difference Between Coaching Training and Mentor Skills

There is a large overlap between coaching skills and mentor skills, and after taking most coaching training courses you should have at least some basic mentor skills.  One of the key differences between skills needed to coach and skills needed to mentor is experience, which gives the mentor credibility.  Experience is the one thing you need to become a mentor that you can’t get from coaching training.  Beyond a sincere interest in helping someone grow, commitment, and confidence in your abilities, being a mentor with a coaching training background can provide some specific value.  These mentor skills include:

Skill #1: Goal Setting

Goals should ideally be set using S.M.A.R.T., which stands for goal planning that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable and Ambitious, has a Reason for achieving the goal, and a Time to achieve the goal by.  These mentor skills can be transferred over from your coaching training.

Skill #2: Action Plan/ Strategy

Remember, you’ve been there so you know what the possible options are, as well as the pros and cons.

Skill #3: Accountability

Another one of the mentor skills you can borrow from your coaching training.  Just knowing that someone will be asking about action steps can be very motivating, especially with a mentor who is held in high regard.

Skill #4: Re-assessment of goals and strategy

Make sure your protégé stays on track.

Skill #5: Celebrating wins and providing encouragement when obstacles arise

The best part about being a mentor is helping to celebrate the wins, and making sure that wins are actually celebrated.  Some people have trouble celebrating the smaller wins toward their bigger goals, and failing to do so can really affect motivation when obstacles come up.  If someone has been working hard toward a goal and there doesn’t seem to be progress, obstacles seem that much bigger.  These are mentor skills that can be improved through coaching training.

Using Mentor Skills to Give Back

.

There are several mentor skills that you can refine through coaching training programs.   Unlike your coaching practice, however, mentoring is more about giving back than making a living.  I tend to think of mentoring others as a way of ‘paying forward’ to all the people who have mentored me through various times in my life.

What Good is a Career Coach Certificate if You Still Don’t Have Enough Clients? Read This Before You Invest in Another Coaching Training Program

Career Coach Certificates and Coaching Training Doesn’t Work

Do you have a career coach certificate and still can’t find enough clients? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Most coaching training programs teach you coaching techniques, but fall short when teaching ways for coaches to find clients, let alone grateful clients who pay cash and refer people. Is that too much to ask for? Of course not. So before you sign up for another coaching training program and try to get an advanced career coach certificate in hopes of finally getting more clients, read on.

How Worthless is Your Career Coach Certificate, Really?

Last week a client sent me a referral. When I phoned this “warm lead”, the guy had the audacity to tell me to email him with my qualifications and he would get back to me. I responded that an email with my qualifications wouldn’t really give him much information about what to expect from a coaching session, and I was offering him a gift of one hour of my time so he could experience a coaching session first hand.

If I had emailed him with the latest career coach certificate or coaching training diploma, he would not be my client today. Why? He told me after his free session. “Wow! I never would have guessed that a session like this could be so valuable by reading an email or looking at a web page.”

The other reason why not to send these prospects your career coach certificate, or even 10 if you have that many, is because you are no longer the leader. If you start following orders, you will loose all hopes of leading these prospective clients toward their goals. It’s a test. And if you buy into it, you will be a slave to those requests.

The Ultimate Career Coach Certificate? Coaching Training on How to Stand up For Yourself

One client said she didn’t want to pay long distance charges. What would have happened if I said, “Oh, it’s ok. I’ll call you. And by the way, I’ll send you a copy of my career coach certificate.”? At that moment she was saying that she didn’t value my time. What you say next means more to them than any career coach certificate or coaching training diploma. Be the coach. Step up to the plate and coach them into showing up for that free session. Believe in the value you can offer. And if you can’t provide enough massive value to your clients during a free session for them to want to sign up for coaching, then you may need more coaching training. But make your decision based on what you will learn, and not what type of certificate you will get.

Life Coach Books: Get your Coaching Training from the Masters

There are so many great books out there that should be added to the life coach books section of the library.  But if you are looking to go beyond a good read, and really get some coaching training, you need to put the information into action.  The most efficient way to do this is to read about whatever you are struggling with at the moment, and start implementing ideas as soon as possible.  Some great life coach books to get you started are:

The Portable Coach: 28 Sure Fire Strategies for Business and Personal Success by Thomas J. Leonard and Byron Larson
Leonard started Coach U in 1992 and the CoachVille School of Coaching.  This is one of the original life coach books, as it was originally designed as a part of the coaching training at Coach U, and is a guide for personal and professional growth.  Some of the topics include “Adding Value for the Joy of It” and “Endorsing Your Worst Weaknesses”.

Rules for Revolutionaries by Guy Kawasaki
This book explains how to create revolutionary products and services, as well as strategies to take them to market. This is a great book for anyone who is looking for coaching training on creative development.

The Structure of Magic, by Richard Bandler and John Grinder
This book is written for psychologists, but is a must read if you are looking for some great coaching training.  Bandler and Grinder analyze how master clinicians are able to intimately connect with people in order to transform lives, and in a way that seems magical.  This is one of the best life coach books for learning the communication skills needed to become a master.

Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill
Written in 1937 and still being published, read, and quoted.  A must read for anyone interested in helping people transform their lives.

Anything written by Tony Robbins
Tony has written a multitude of life coach books, and is a true guru.  His seminars are based on his books, so you can get your coaches training from the books, audios, or live seminars without missing anything.

Getting to Yes by Roger Fisher
This book is based on “win-win” negotiation.  My husband read it, and so I had to read it to make sure he wasn’t getting an unfair advantage.  But it really isn’t about bargaining in the traditional sense.  It explains how to negotiate so neither side has to loose their integrity by abandoning their beliefs.

This list is by no means complete.  There are many more books out there that provide coaches training.  So if I haven’t mentioned any of your favorite life coach books, add them to the list by sharing a comment below.

How To Become a Parenting Coach – Accountability Coaching Training on the Front Lines

What do you need to do to become a parenting coach? A great niche market. There are a lot of parents out there, and anyone who has watched any of those nanny shows can see there are a lot of parents who need help. Perhaps “Super Nanny” is the British version of the accountability coach. What does it take to become a parenting coach? Anyone who has ever had kids, or taken care of them for extended periods of time has at least some instant credibility. If you are a certified accountability coach, or have coaching training in accountability…even better.

The first thing to do to become a parenting coach to your client? You need to teach the parent to ‘model integrity’. The parents need to understand that what they value most…perhaps a more peaceful home, kids that follow instructions and have good manners, is directly related to their own ability to honor their word and their commitments. Children get a lot of certainty and security knowing that their parents are actually in control, rather than circumstances. Children may try to get their parents to back down from what they just said, but they actually thrive on having limits placed on them, as long as the limits are consistent. Give them a little accountability coaching training lesson.

How do you teach parents to model integrity? Think coaching training

You’re really just training your clients to become coaches themselves!

  • Awareness. If you have decided to become a parenting coach, you need to lead the client into an awareness of how they are being powerful with their commitments, and where they are breaking their commitments. This can be the “tough love” phase. Don’t step over anything, yet don’t go out of your way to make them feel punished. You are the role model for their behavior as well.
  • Impact. To become a parenting coach you need the skills to get the client to connect their word with what they value most, and connect breaking their commitments with what they want most to avoid. This is really coaching training 101. For example, if they are not following through with what they say they will do, their children will pick up on that and use that as an excuse to do the same. Also, children will not take their parents seriously when parents don’t walk their talk. It’s a little like the gambling mentality. If a parent folds or gives in, even if it’s only 1 out of 10 times…the child will see that as an opportunity. “If I push the issue, it might just work.” The resultant behavior can be subtle sulking to tantrums on the floor of the store.
  •  The Leadership Converstation. To become a parenting coach…a good one…this is the moment of truth. This is where your coaching training pays off.
    • Are you able to become a parenting coach who can empower parents to make a true possibility-based (rather than past-based) choice in terms of their commitments and being their word?
    • Are you able to become a parenting coach who can train the parent in creating a powerful relationship of integrity between their words and their actions?
    • Are you able to become a parenting coach who is able to help set up positive conditioning and reinforcement systems for the new relationship that the client has with their promises?

Once a parent has begun to have power with their word, they will start seeing amazing results with their children. Integrity is NOT natural or easy, but it can be trained. And who better qualified to give them the coaching training they need?

How to Become a Dating Coach: Coaches Training on Identifying The 3 Main Types of Men

If you want to become a dating coach, the first thing you will need to learn is how to quickly categorize the 3 main personality types of men. Of course, some women will be better suited as matches for each type as well, but others might be able to date across categories. In order to become a dating coach, you will need to be able to appreciate the strengths and Achilles’ heels of each category.

Coaches Training Disclaimer: For the sake of discussion, we will assume that men do not switch categories and no category is better than another. Some men may have a secondary trait, but no one is a perfect balance of all three. There is variation within each group, but I chose some extreme cases here to help paint better pictures.

  • The Leader: This one is self explanatory. This is the guy who runs the company, he runs his home, and it’s his way or the highway. Usually a very good provider, for women who want to be taken care of financially. This is a dominant , masculine guy, who wants to be in control. The perfect woman for this guy is faithful, loyal and obedient. Once a woman has won his confidence, he will build marble statues of her. Or maybe I should say, he will have them made. If you want to become a dating coach for this type of guy, make sure he is clear about what he wants so that he is shopping in the right aisle. Look at your coaches training notes to make sure you allow him to make choices and suggestions.
  • Mr. Steady: He will not change directions quickly. This guy will not invent a light bulb, but he will build a factory and run a factory that will produce them. He might be a doctor, or teaching coaches training programs. This type is looking for a resourceful, hardworking woman who is self-sufficient. He is dependable, so he is always in demand. He is there to support other people (in business he supports the Leader type) and he comforts sick people, etc. The woman who wants her man all to herself will be miserable with this type of guy. To become a dating coach for this guy, he will have to think overnight about whether or not to work with you.
  • The Dreamer: Some people refer to this type as the Visionary. This guy doesn’t want anyone to tell him what to do, how to do it, or where to go. He is like a kite, swaying in the wind. The wrong woman for him will be like a heavy rope that pulls the kite to the ground. The right woman will be like a string, allowing the kite to soar higher and steadier. She needs to enjoy the wild ride, or at least appreciate the scenery. The Dreamer may be an inventor, or designer (perhaps a designer of coaches training programs?). The world needs the dreamer, because he is the one who seeks out injustice and slays the dragons. To become a dating coach for this type, pin him down to a deadline date for his goals before he gets started on another quest.

Now that you have enough information to get started on your quest to become a dating coach. Take some time to figure out which category you and your friends fit within. It wouldn’t hurt to get additional coaching training in assessments to help subdivide the categories a little more and help with more specific communication styles.

Coaching Certification

With a Coaching Certification, Youll Have a Large Certificate for Your Wall

Coaching certification in my mind is an essential part of coaching mastery. While some would argue that coaching training is enough, consider that coaching is now a booming industry which means competition is increasing for a market that is still relatively small. By that I mean that there are still many individuals and companies who either don’t know about coaching, do not understand the value versus consulting, or have used unqualified poorly trained coaches with resulting experiences that have been less than satisfactory. In addition to the influx of coaches there are also many niches being developed which segments available markets into smaller units. What this can create for people interested in hiring a coach is confusion. “Who to choose?” and “Based on what?” are two key questions that are foremost in your potential client’s mind.

The benefits of coaching certification are several but first and foremost having your coaching certification establishes you. It says that you have undergone the necessary coaching training, accumulated the necessary skill sets and undergone the testing that qualifies you as a coach. Other benefits of coaching certification are:

  • It enhances your credibility and reassures potential clients that you are professional
  • Demonstrates that you have high professional standards
  • Shows that you have a code of ethics
  • Demonstrates that you have high knowledge and skill sets
  • Demonstrates that you take the profession seriously
  • Reinforces the integrity of the coaching profession

Coaching certification is something that you should be working toward if you are seriously considering a career in any coaching field be it Life Coaching, Career Coaching, Business Coaching, Marketing, Health, or any of the niches available or that you define. Look for organizations or schools that offer authorized coaching certification programs in addition to coaching training. Of the most recognized The International Coaching Federation, CTI (Coaches Training Institute), and CCI are at the top. There are a plethora of others but the best are recognized by these organizations, notably ICF.

Coaching certification is worth the time and money, especially if you are after working with fortune 500 executives (those circles value certification). It separates you from the rest who don’t go the distance. One other note; certification is, in my mind, necessary but so is the mastery of the business of coaching. Make sure that you also seek coaching trainings and coaching jobs that will train you in building your business model as well as the sales and marketing of your coaching business. Too many leave this aspect out and it’s an over-sight that will cost you in time and money.
