Business Coaching Training: How to become a coach with a successful practice

May 19th, 2009

With the volume of material on business coaching training it’s often difficult to know what to look for,  When considering how to become a coach with a successful business and one who can lead clients in there own business you begin with the fundamentals of business planning and  implementation. If you focus on the following guidelines you can’t go wrong.

Business Coaching Training- Secrets of Success

Business coaching training:  Secret #1- Vision and Focus

Business coaching training begins with vision and focus. Most small business owners skip this part and consequently find themselves hard pressed to meet the demands of their business and personal life.  They lack a clear vision and what their key area of focus will be. So, they find themselves working “in “the business not on the business. This state is too reactive with too much time spent in the trenches. The brand is not well defined, the plan not well thought out and the end game is not clear.  So Secret # 1 is articulate your vision with as much focused detail as possible. It’s the step most people skip and it is the first step that is critical to how everything else evolves.

Business coaching training:  Secret #2: Set Your Goals:

The second secret in business coaching training is goal setting. It’s time to become a coach who knows how to bridge the gap between a business plan and a “to do” list.  Goals are essential to a business plan. One thing to remember is that business goals should also have personal meaning. So set the financial goals (a must), your target market and anything else that’s relevant and then help you clients get clear about why the goals are important to them and their vision so that there are no obstacles that might get in the way of achieving those goals.

Business coaching training secret #3: Build the Plan

Now it’s time to build the plan. Many business owners plan don’t follow through on this.  Those who do, rarely integrate it into their daily lives.  How can that be?  The business plan is the bible and guide.  It contains your goals, strategy, time lines, marketing strategy, necessary systems and more.  Sound like a lot of work?  It doesn’t have to be nor does it have to be the size of a telephone book.  The point is to get it down and get it blocked out. It can be refined as you go along.

Business coaching training secret #4 – Action Steps

Become a coach in business coach training who helps their clients break their goals down into action steps – or strategy.  The strategy should include design to implement those steps.  Another suggestion is to set milestone dates to check in and see where you are- monthly, quarterly, weekly- it doesn’t matter. What matters is that it is done and the commitment made to use it as a gauge for direct and viable feedback.  It may be as simple as having your clients put these steps into their schedule, or it may mean bringing in a new team.  Most people never get this far and that’s when things start to fall apart.

It’s no business coaching training secret that most successful people know the value of great business coaching.  To quote Bob Nardelli CEO of Home Depot, “I absolutely believe that people, unless coached, never reach their maximum capabilities.”

Become a coach who helps people realize their maximum potential. .

Life Coach Books (part 2): Get Your Business Coaching Training From the Masters

            January 28th, 2009

Some of the best life coach books won’t be found in the life coach books section of the library. But there are a lot of books that we can borrow from other fields that would be great for business coaching training. If you want to turn reading into business coaching training, make sure you put what you read into action as soon as possible. Some great “life coach books that you can use to get some business coaching training are:

The E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber

This “E” stands for Entrepreneurial. Gerber points out that most small businesses fail because the owners are working in their business as technicians, rather than on working on business development and growth. While it doesn’t really fit securely inside the life coach books category, it is a classic that provides some great business coaching training tips.

Selling the Invisible: A Field Guide to Modern Marketing by Harry Beckwith

This could just as easily be called a life coach book for marketing. The strategies are written specifically for people in the service industry.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach their Children that the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! by Robert Kiyosaki

Kiyosaki believes that our educational system prepares the children in our society to become good employees who get locked into the “rat-race”. He suggests that we learn accounting and investing skills, so we can have financial freedom.

The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss

This one is true to life as life coach books go.  It explains modern business strategies that would be especially valuable to share with clients who are having difficulty balancing work and leisure.

Eat That Frog! 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time by Brian Tracy

Most people struggle with not having enough time in their day. Brian Tracy uses a clever metaphor to describe how to stop procrastinating, and get the most important tasks done first. This is great business coaching training material that can be put into action right away.

I’m sure there are a lot of other great references that apply to business coaching training that I haven’t mentioned. If you want to share your favorite life coach books, feel free to add them to the list in the comments section.
