The Definition of Coaching: The Four Traits of a Master Career Coach

June 3rd, 2009

What is the definition of coaching?  Coaching is about results.  Whether you are a career coach, or another type of coach, the definition of coaching is directly related to the results your clients receive and your evolution as a coach. To make the definition of coaching more tangible it is necessary to explain it in terms of the four traits of a master career coach.

Career Coach Traits Help to Illustrate the Definition of Coaching

1.  Outstanding results:

A master career coach consistently produces outstanding results.  Results are key within the definition of coaching.  Master career coaches stand out from the crowd when coaching clients in their area of practice.

2.  Effortless Results:

Master career coaches perform and make it look effortless to create situations that seem impossible for other coaches.  They expend little effort.  This is one of the reasons the “free session” is so much more valuable than simply telling prospective clients what the definition of coaching means.  Many people won’t understand what coaching is all about until they actually experience it.

3.  Total Freedom and Power.

A master career coach has the ability to wield their coaching skills in any direction and in increasingly powerful ways creating results without limits.  A master career coach can get results with anyone.  The definition of coaching may seem a little vague because, even within a niche practice there are endless results you can achieve.  There are just so many areas in which you can coach during a single coaching session that it can be difficult to narrow down the definition of coaching.

4.  Their Identity is Coaching:

Career coaches are their craft.  They become one with their coaching; a distinction between the individual and the coach no longer exists. When you think of Michael Jordan you think of basketball.  When you’re a career coach, you’re always a coach.  If something goes wrong in a casual situation, the coach inside comes out.  In this way, the definition of coaching is similar to the definition of a being a doctor.  Doctors do not slump into their seats when there is an emergency on an airplane they take action; they become a doctor.

Results Are Key to the Definition of Coaching

In any definition of coaching, the key is results.  When looking at a tangible example of a master career coach you see that coaching is not just about what you help others to accomplish; it’s about who you and your clients become in the process.

Career Coaching Skills for Supervisors: How Your Coaching Career Can Help Managers & Supervisors

April 5th, 2009

Career Coaching Skills for Supervisors?

What if supervisors really did take on the role of being the coach? What kind of results would they get? I wish some of my previous employers had a mandatory coaching skills program for management. This sounds like a great niche for a coaching career. What would it be like if you taught career coaching skills for supervisors? Imagine the difference you could make in a company and the effect on your coaching career.

Let’s Take a Look at Some of The Benefits of Teaching Career Coaching Skills for Supervisors

When managers and supervisors participate in a career coaching skills for supervisors class, they have an opportunity to look at their relationships with their employees in a different light. When supervisors step into the role of the “coach”, there is a certain understanding that employees are going to get something besides a pay check. Managers turn a job into a coaching career.

We don’t usually see examples of supervisors seeing themselves as coaches. Sometimes supervisors try to be the “friend” and others the “commander in charge”. Common management complaints are difficulty keeping good people, making productivity quotas, and low morale. What if supervisors could fill their organization with the same level of commitment and motivation that you see in clients from your own coaching career? Could the role of a supervisor be seen as fun, exciting and rewarding instead of stressful?

After Implementing Career Coaching Skills for Supervisors, a Tremendous Shift Can Occur

As a result of taking on the role of a coach in a coaching career, a supervisor’s team will feel a new sense of loyalty, enthusiasm, and purpose. What would it be like to work for someone who wanted to help you achieve your goals, supporting you in the obstacles that inevitably come up, and help move past your limitations?

After learning career coaching skills for supervisors, your clients will be able to help employees realize their career aspirations. Your clients will become great coaches who know their people, their strengths, weaknesses, and can use this information to provide training and resources that will motivate their employees to perform at their best. And once word gets out about the effect you have on an organization, you will have a very prosperous coaching career.

Career Coach Training…investment strategy for the current economy?

December 26th, 2008

Could a career coach training be the best use of your investment money? Have you watched the stock market swing several hundred points up or down in a single day? Even the value investors have been blindsided. The equity in our homes is dropping, more and more companies are going out of business, and the commercial real estate industry is looking for bailout money. Not to mention the mess with the auto industry. It really makes me wonder, is there safe place to invest right now?

With unemployment rates continuing to rise, there is a great opportunity for coaches to make a difference. As a career coach, you can help people assess where they are, get the skills they need, and help them navigate through these uncertain times. A lot of people are living in fear and are looking for a leader. Are you that person who will help change their lives? Who do you need to become and what do you have to own about yourself to know you can do this at will? What could career coach training do for you? You are your greatest asset. If you can teach others how to be unstoppable when times are tough, imagine what they will be able to accomplish when the pendulum swings back to a more prosperous time?

Now is not the time to become a complacent bear, walking into a cave for winter’s hibernation. Did you accomplish the goals you set out to do last year? What about 5 years ago? Are you looking forward to the new year with anticipation and hope? Or fear and dread? It’s time to get a plan of action in place for the upcoming winter months, and a enrolling in career coach training can help you get you on the right path. Before you know it, it will be spring, and the season of opportunity. Get ready!

What to Look for in a Career Coach Training Program

December 24th, 2008

How do you find a career coach training program that will help you become a world class coach? First of all, you will need to know your strengths and weaknesses. Find out if the program you are interested in does any type ofassessments, such as the DISC or Values assessments. The results will give your coaches insight about you, and may also help you define which type of coaching you will be most naturally most adept.

In addition to weekly training sessions, your career coach training program should also include one-on-one mentoring with a master coach. Your coach will help you define and reach your goals, as well as help you tackle obstacles that come up in your path of expanding your identity and help you get results.

Peer coaching is another powerful aspect of a career coach training program. Rarely can we get raw feedback from our clients, let alone peers who know what to expect from a coaching session. Coaching 3-5 peers on a weekly basis with honest scoring and feedback will not only help you improve your skills, but will help you own your ability to be an outstanding coach. And since coaching is all about results, you will need to be coaching your peers for about 2 months to make sure there is enough time to see your clients get results.

What about sales and marketing training? Many coaches shudder at the thought of having to do sales and marketing. But, how are you going to be a world class coach unless you have clients? Even if you have a background in sales and marketing, make sure yourcareer coach training program offers the basics as well as the cutting edge material you will need to keep your coaching schedule as full as you want. And if nothing else, you will have the tools to master this at some level until you can hire someone else to do it for you.

Selecting the right career coaches training program will help you become a world-class coach, and become a leader to help others fulfill their destinies.

Career Coach Training is something you don’t want to wait to do; especially today. Whether you are already a trained or certified coach or someone entering the coaching industry today, career coach training is a valuable asset. Being trained as a career coach can open doors for you and provide you with a very satisfying career helping people develop their career potential. There are the fundamentals of coaching that good career coach training must provide you in terms of your skill sets. As a career coach you will add to your toolkit as a career specialist in addition to your coaching skills. Become trained and skilled at the use of Assessments. They will help you and your client understand their strengths, their ideal environment, how to achieve the maximum result in communication and to set actionable goals. You will use these assessments to help people discover their “deal breakers” and even how to interview the company they are looking to work for. Career Coach… Can You Help The Seminar Junkie?

December 20th, 2008

What’s the difference between going to a seminar and working with a career coach
? Don’t get me wrong. I love seminars. I would rather go to a seminar than spend a weekend at a spa…I come home feeling relaxed, revitalized, and ready to take on the world. But on my own I usually don’t do half of what I set out to do. At least I learn something different and get a chance to meet new people. Some of them have even become friends. But without someone like a career coach holding me accountable to change…it would just be another great weekend.

Do you know any seminar junkies? They go to every seminar they can. Sometimes pouring every extra dollar they make into the next seminar. This seminar is going to be the one that will propel them to success. They have an amazing knowledge base, but are they able to apply it all? Not really. The problem is that like any other junkie, once they get back into their old environment, hang out with the same people, and get back to their usual busy lives, they go back to their comfort zone. Back to autopilot, with perhaps a little more insight. It’s obvious to most of us that unless the drug addict who goes to rehab can change their environment, their peer group, and receive ongoing coaching, they are likely to go back to drugs. What makes us think we are any better? Maybe we should consider a career coach after all.

What we really need is someone to make every day as exciting and fun as a seminar. Someone like a career coach, who can help us create a new environment, define goals, develop a strategy, and provide accountability. AND make it fun! Now we are on track. We have the knowledge, support and structure to make real change. Now that sounds like something that will propel us to success.

Career Coach…Extreme Makeover for Your Job?

December 19th, 2008

Do you need a career coach? Are you stuck in a dead end job? Do you love what you do for work, or are you waiting to win the lottery so you can quit your job? Does going to work inspire you to be your best in all the other areas of your life, or does it make you feel grumpy and tired at the end of the day? Is your career fueling your passions, or is it a means to an end? Unfortunately, many people never get started because the task seems so daunting.

Working with a career coach can have a dramatic effect on your life. How does it work? First, you will need to do a thorough search of your strengths and weaknesses. Assessments such as DISC and Values Profiles can provide great insight. Your career coach will also guide you to look at your past positions, and help you sort out what you loved/hated about each. This will allow you to find some common trends to guide your search. In addition, you need to take a look at your skills. Hard skills are those skills that can be measured, such as knowledge base, skills you may have learned along the way. Soft skills are more esoteric, and not particularly easy to measure. They are our natural aptitudes and abilities. For example, someone may have the soft skill to be organized, but lack the hard skill of knowing how to implement a file system.

A career coach will not only help you understand your passions, but also get you into action through strategizing a career plan and a job acquisition plan. Your coach will know how to get you motivated, and hold you accountable to your goals. And with professional support in handling the obstacles, having a great career is within reach.
