When you help your clients with business plan coaching, building a strategic plan is a great skill to have. Running corporate planning retreats and strategic planning consulting are great services to offer, and it makes a huge difference for your clients!

In the process of creating their business plan, and once your client has determined their organization’s priorities, you’ll want to help your business coaching client to organize those priorities into a final written plan that everyone on their team can understand and follow.

In the “organize” step, you’ll help your client create a written plan that guides their team’s focus, actions, and resources towards the priorities. From a glance, this plan helps their team answer these questions about the  enterprise:

  • What are our most important goals (and the deadlines)?
  • What do we need to focus on?
  • What actions do we need to constantly take (and when)?
  • Who is responsible for each goal, focus, and action?

This will help get the team on the same page, organize their mindset, and help them understand how each item fits together to achieve the big picture accomplishments.

How to Organize

Tell your business coaching client the following:

  • List the organization’s top GOALS (usually 2-5 – likely the items you circled in the Prioritize step).
  • Determine the organization’s Areas of Focus:
    • What are the areas that require improvement and focus? Where does the team ALREADY spend important time/money/resources?
    • ELIMINATE any areas of focus that are no longer important.
    • COMBINE any areas of focus that should be assimilated.
    • ADD / SEPARATE areas of focus that deserve their own area.
  • Organize all the remaining goals underneath an Area of Focus (likely the items you highlighted in the Prioritize step).
  • List any Consistent Actions (ongoing activity regardless of any goal achievement) beneath an Area of Focus.
  • Assign each Goal, Action, and Area of Focus to ONE OWNER.
  • Generate any horizontal plans (timelines) based upon the content of the “vertical plan” you created. These may include monthly goal calendars, project plans, and daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly action lists.
